Question Volume pot not working?

Sign in to disble this ad
Volume pot (on the inside) of the bridge pup was not glued down to the place so it was moving when I turned it,and finally today one of the cables broke down.No sound was coming of it of course.

First I glued it to the place then I revired the cable, now I can get the sound, but its locked at the full volume and it doesn't work.

Question is did I revire it wrongly,is there a short circuit,or by gluing it did I mess whole the pot?

Thakns a lot!

by rewiring do you mean soldering? I hope you did not glue the wire... if you did solder the wire are you sure it's in the right ''prong'' of the potentiometer? maybe you just shorted the 2 wires together?

I soldered the wire to the pot. It doesn't seem to be touching the other ones but even if it did, would it cause it not to work,is such a short circuit possible?

About glueing,I didn't know that,I need to change the whole pot it seems but it doesn't worth that really.

this is likely a short, if you just soldered the 2 wires toghether, bypassing the pot, you'd be stuck to full volume just like you are right now.

There is one way you can check the pot, unsolder the wires and check the resistance (with an ohmmeter) between the center prong with one of the outer prongs, as you turn the shaft it should read zero at one end of the rotation and the pot's full value at the other, there should be a variation as you turn the pot...

Like the other poster advised: NO GLUE around potentiometers. Just a simple threaded
hex nut with a washer is all you need to secure that properly.

That 'pot' is special, as in variable resister special, so also make sure your soldering in done correctly..use some electronic soldering flux too..makes the heat transference much quicker
and even. When you are done, clean up the solder connections with some denatured
alcohol to remove excess flux residue.
