Waivering note.. HELP

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm having some trouble with a sort of "waivering" in fretted notes above the 12th fret. I thought at first it might be an intonation issue but i can't seem to get rid of it. Has anyone else had this problem, and what is usually the "fix" if there is one? Pleas.... help.
just to clarify it's mainly on my E string that this occurs.

Pickups adjusted too high can cause that problem. Just hold down on the pup to lower it in the cavity and play the E string. If the warble goes away, simply lower it.

Try lowering your neck pickup first, if you have two. Bridge pickups can usually go pretty high without trouble.

Wow... that was it, my neck pup was too high... i just recently aquired the bass and the action was just way too high for my tastes.. so in lowering the strings and adding tension, i guess i got them too close to the pups. Thanks alot for sharing the knowledge.

you guys are smart! you know your stuff, I'm impressed. I only learned this a couple of years ago. George Furlanetto taught me about fixing this problem.

I know why it happens but don't know HOW it happens. What exactly do the magnets do to the string that causes that warble?

Just a guess...by being so close they pull the string/s towards the pickup which makes the note change slightly back and forth.

It's caused by FM.

The strings encounter resistance to movement in the pickup's magnetic field. Think of it like a rubbery version of touching a string over the 7th fret to create a harmonic.

By the way, I had a similar-sounding warble problem with a BadAss II, but only the E string was affected. Pickup height was not the answer in that case. I fixed it by filing the bridge groove to ensure the string was levering at the very edge of the block. My theory is that the string bent over the bridge block such that contact was behind the edge, and with string vibration it would "re-intonate" as it touched the edge of the block. Whatever the real reason was, the fix worked. I've had to do that to both my BadAss IIs.

Wow, that is really interesting. I have an unusual "warble" type effect on my E string. It's not extreme but it is noticeable and it makes tuning more difficult for sure. I would like it to go away.

I wonder if it could be the groove in the Badass bridge as well?

Yep... had the same problem with my stingray. i'm adjusting intonation driving myself nuts thinkin' the bass had some weird issue or something. those magnets will do that if they're too close to the strings!
