Wanted in Oregon: Bass Tech/Luthier

Hey everyone,

I'm in the process of getting pieced thrown together to mod my Jazz Bass, and frankly some of what I want done is beyond my skills. I'm waiting on a new body from Warmoth, and the first step will be shielding. I'd probably be up to installing the shielding in the cavities, but being 'solder challenged', I will probably defer to someone with some experience under their belt. Once the shielding is done, I'll need my new Fralin pups, pots, BA II tailpiece, and all wiring/grounds installed and/or massaged in order to get it where I want (no hum, the stock pups on my Geddy right now are TERRIBLE at picking up RF whenever I'm near TV's, computer monitors, neon lights, etc.).

Anyone have some suggestions for someone experienced in the Portland area?

Thanks much!

In Montana they have signs over bars that say,"Before engaging your mouth, make sure your mind is in gear!"

Thanks for the tip. I've emailed them to see what their costs would be.

If I read your post correctly, you are still assembling parts or the work is yet to begin. If that's the case, I'd strongly recommend giving the job a try yourself, first. If you know anyone that can solder a joint, ask for his help. His background doesn't have to be musical. Another low-risk task might be to just walk to the back of Weathers - maybe buy a new set of strings of something - and ask whoever comes up to you if they wouldn't mind soldering a point or two. I know they have a workbench area for at least doing setups.

PS I've also paid for work at the 12th Fret and was happy with the outcome.

I've had good luck with a guy named Terry who works through Weathers Music in Salem.

I've brought in dozens of basses to him and he's done a good job on all of them. I mostly just get setups done, but occasionally jacks need to be replaced, things re-wired, frets leveled, etc. I trust him with my basses.

PM me and I'll give you his email or phone number...

Yeah... I think (it was a while ago) Terry also did a setup and adjusted a nut for me. I don't know how much more he does beyond that (i.e., level a finger board, route a body, replace a neck), but he has an easy personality....

The 12th Fret in Portland [on Belmont] is where I took my Deluxe J - great setup, great fret work there; excellent quality control, quick turnaround.
