Warwick Thumb BO Cracking

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey guys, I have a 98 Warwick Thumb BO. The other day I noticed a crack running down the length of the body. I am pretty freaked out at the moment. Is there a way to fix this? Is there anything I can do to prevent any further cracking?

Sorry to see that. I would recommend contacting the Warwick Store and Custom Shop in New York City. Those guys are pretty much experts on all of these repairs, so ship it to them and I am sure they can do something for you.

Since it's a problem with the glue seam between the two halves of the body opening up a little bit, and not with the wood itself splitting, it should be pretty easy for a repair person to re-glue the seam. You might even be able to do it yourself, if you use the right glue...

can you really feel a gap between the two pieces or are they just uneven?

I have a 2005 Corvette and a 1997 Thumb BO and on both I can feel some places where the pieces meet, especially behind the headstock. No cracking there. Just uneven

I would speculate that's caused by the different pieces of wood reacting differently to weather over time, if not waxed regularly? (I'm not the orgininal owner and just got the basses)

I've also seen a couple 'Wicks that were actually cracked so I guest this is a "common" problem the Warwick Customer Support are aware of. I would try contacting them.

Yikes! It can be fixed, but who pays for the repair?

The owner. Who else? Its not a warranty issue at this point.

I've had a few Thumb BO's & most had a noticeable edge to the glueline- the wood expands, contracts & otherwise moves a bit over time, and the seam often opens a bit at the surface- which usually(IME)doesn't mean it's actually coming apart. I would contact a Warwick tech person if I was unsure.

When I had a Thumb, I waxed it every two weeks.
