Weird sounds from fretless

My MIM Fretless jazz gets a strange "woof woof woof" sound on notes above the 12th fret on the E string. It's like an out of phase vibrato. (I'm not sure if I'm describing this right). In any case, it's not a clear note like the other places on the neck or on other strings.

I'm using TI Jazz Flats. It does the same thing with roundwounds, but not nearly as pronounced.

Any suggestions?

Maybe you need to practise more?
Maybe your pickups are too close to the strings and stringpull -issue are causing the notes to sound odd?
Maybe your strings are past their best?

I'd do a proper set up before worrying too much.
Good luck!

Pickups are most likely too high pulling the string. I would start there and see if the issue persists.

^^ They are all correct. Lower the E side of your pickup a little.

I've only ever noticed this effect with flats. And on Jazz basses!

Thanks.

I'll try the pickup lowering and see if that alleviates the problem.
