weirdo guitar finish problem

Sign in to disble this ad

it looks like its bruised or something.

the thing is. some of it is on the binding too, which leads me to believe that somebody or a machine smeared some sort of ink/dye/stain over it by accident.

what do you guys think I should do?
I really cant be bothered to send it back to ibanez or GAK.
ive got sandpaper, a power sander, tung oil and a tin of polyurethane varnish

It's hard to tell what it is by the picture or if it's in the wood underneath the finish, or in the finish. Take a close look and determine first what it is. If it's just on top of the finish, it may be easy to remove. If not, you're into more extensive work. The fact that you can't be bothered to send it back indicates that you aren't all that concerned about it.

If it's a dye on top of the finish, you can see if it will wipe off with some alcohol and a cloth. Or even soap and water. Putting something over it, like tung oil, is no solution.

Sorry, I phrased my post badly, its not that I cannot be bothered to send it back, I just dont really want to send it back

the reason i dont want to send it back is because its going to cost me £10+ for postage, and they may not even fix it or replace it because its a finish problem and may not be covered on the warrenty. Also, it would mean that I would not be able to play for a while(considering that GAK delayed my order for a week when I first got it.)

and when I said I had tung oil, I meant that I could sand down the finish of the neck(or the stain at least) and refinishing the back of the neck in tung oil

Now I understand. Well, try cleaning the stuff off with a solvent. Try alcohol (methyl hydrate-sold as shellac thinner) first. It dries very quickly and leaves no residue. It won't harm any of the modern finishes on your bass. Work in a well ventilated space. The fumes aren't good for you. Don't let children, pets, or anyone else drink it. It's a poison. If that won't touch it, try some paint thinner. Try a bit of dish soap and water. If none of those remove it, then, if you want to get rid of it, you'll have to take the finish off down to bare wood (not at all an easy job), make sure all that colour is out of the wood, then refinish. That's where you can use the polyurethane or tung oil.

Try the solvent approach first. Try using one of those fine kitchen scubbies but be careful as they can cut through the finish and take all the gloss off. Go easy with anything abrasive.

Good luck.

It's definitly a guitar and not a bass so no further action is needed
Seriously, I come to think of two possible reasons for the marking. First of all the wood used can not be a misscolored one since the binding shows the same fault. If the marks are under the finnish then thr belt sander is the guilty one. If on top of the finnish then it's the buffer machine. If it's the buffer then it can be easily removed like 62bass said. If it sits under the finnish you have to sand it off and oil or refinnish the neck. I presume it's a bolt neck. That would make the procedure much more easier.
