What clear coat to use on headstock?

I am buying a blank neck, and applying a custom made waterslide to the headstock...
what kind of lacquer or clear coat should i use over it to protect it?
i plan on going to home depot or lowes, and would prefer something in a spray can...

what should i get?

thanks

I've had very good results with Minwax Poly in the spray can. I make sure the surface is completely clean of dust and oils before spraying. I spray on many light coats till I have the desired buildup, and wet sand after drying for several days.

Ideally, you should use the same material that is already on the neck. If it's poly, use poly. If it's nitro, use nitro. That said, poly will work better over nitro than the other way around. If in doubt, use poly.

I've used the Minwax Polyurethane in Gloss and Satin, and they both work quite well. I'd say the Satin is the easiest to get a professional looking result, but if you prefer gloss then I'd recommend doing a couple test samples; varying thicknesses, varying number of coats, varying spray distance, etc...

i plan on sanding the headstock bare before i apply the decal..

I used Minwax Matte Poly on mine. About 5 coats, didn't do any sanding or anything afterwards, only before to get the old logo/finish off.

Easy to do with bare wood. Visit ReRanch.com/ They have a neck amber that applies under the finish. It's very nice classic shade.
