Depends on the color of the bass. Here are some of my matchups:

Sunburst - Chrome
Walnut - Black
Mahogany - Gold
Red - Black
Purple - Gold

Yes, nickel should be in the list... I guess it falls under "chrome". But it looks fairly different (and nicer in imho) when aged

Nickel also. Not as blue as chrome.

Nickel is more 'classic' than chrome. AFAIK all the early hardware was nickel until the late seventies. I prefer the brown undertone it has. Nice patina with age.
