What a difference raising my action has made!

I used to have my action really low which made playing my bass smoother and easier, but I figured out tonight that it was a bit too low. I like to dig in a bit when playing gigs and my bass would buzz somewhat, so I just thought I was playing too hard. I don't know why I didn't think of it sooner, but I raised my action and now I can dig in a little without the strings buzzing. Feels much nicer! I think my playing hasn't been too hard. I think it's been just fine, but my action being way too low made me think that I play way too hard.

The correct action height is the one that feels and sounds right for you. People will give you chapter and verse on how near the twelfth fret each string should be but, as far as you should be concerned - Lower the action until just before you get fret buzz when you play normally and that should do it :-).

How low that is it depends on how, and how hard, you hit the strings.

With a light touch and/or a plucking action that is paralell with the face of the Bass then you can go lower, if you pluck harder and more paralell with the ground (dig in) you're gonna need to jack things up a tad.

Title fail. Fixed.

If you can't be a good example, then you'll just have to serve as a horrible warning.

As I cuddled the porcupine he said I had none to blame, but me.
