What do I do when I change to a smaller/larger string guage?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey.

If I changed my string guage to smaller or larger, should I do anything with the nut?

Is there anything else I should take care of?
Something that has to do with the bridge?
Something that has to do with the truss-rod?

Thanks!

ALL BASIC SETUP QUESTIONS ANSWERED HERE - TalkBass Forums

A set up with intonation is a good idea when changing string gauge.

+1 You need to do a basic setup since tension and string size will affect almost every part of the setup. You might also want to give the neck a quick cleanup while you have the strings off.

You shouldn't have to mess with the nut unless you have made a huge jump. If the strings are much thicker (for example stringing BEAD for the first time) you may have to widen the nut slots. A really large jump down might require a new nut.

Nuts should be OK unless you go to monster size strings. You'll probably need to adjust intonation - read the stickies for info on that.

Thanks guys.

And I'm getting a lighter guage.
I'm pretty sure the bass has medium guage strings.

So what you guys say is that I pretty much will need to adjust the intonation, and maybe a little bit about the action of the strings?

Thanks guys.

I think what was said was, a full set up; neck relief/truss rod, action/string height, pick up height & intonation. 8-)
