What finish for fretless?

No, not epoxy versus polyester versus chewing gum...

I recently refinished a converted fretless neck with cyanoacrylate. The base material is phenowood, presumably birch.

The finish looks great, and is surprisingly hard. I polished it out, such that it is mirror smooth. But that's part of the "problem."

There seems to be more fretboard noise than what it had previously. The "clack" of strings hitting the fretboard is a bit louder than before.

I'm wondering if changes in the polish can have an effect on that "clack" and/or on the "mwah" of the bass? Am I better off just sanding down to 1500 grit and leaving it at that?

Thanks in advance!

What strings do ya have on it? The one I recently defretted and finished with superglue has flats on it, and it is not clacky. I am getting a nice smooth sound that I love... Kinda makes me wish my fretted basses sound like it.

Dude, do you have a how-to regarding the superglue finish? I defretted an old Spector a few years ago, and heard of that technique, but never saw a how-to.

THANKS in advance!

Yup...I have TI flats on it already. The neck is so flat I can set the action as low as I want, and the lower it is the worse the clack is.

Eric, as for the process, use the terms Erlewine and super glue in the search feature on this forum, and I think you can find an article on it. I strayed substantially from his method, though, cutting some fairly thick super glue with acetone. The basic process is spread it on, wait, sand it down, repeat until completely level and thick enough for your taste. You can't do this in very thick layers like you might with epoxy.

Thanks much!

I'm at work now, so I'll hold hold off searching till I get home.
