What Hipshots fit the G&L Tribute?

Sign in to disble this ad
I tried searching but didn't come up with anything. I have a 2005 G&L L-2000 Tribute, and while the stock tuners are ok I really like to replace them with Hipshots after installing a set on my MIJ jazz. I remember reading a year or so ago that the Tribby tuners are different from the MIA ones, but in what manner? Does Hipshot even make a tuner that fits the Korean models?

I have a L2500 Tribute and I was going to look into getting Hipshot Ultralites to alleviate the weight issue. Havent done it so far though. So I guess, yes, there are tuners that fit the Tributes.

According to the Hipshot website the HB1 will fit. If you click on the downloads tab there is a drawing with dimensions of the screw hole layout so you can double check them with your bass. Also, seach around before you buy. I have seen sites where you can get them for $75 for 4 and $18 for individuals.

I'll need to check out the drawings, the reason I asked was that I remember reading somewhere that the Tibby and MIA tuners are different and that the HB1s only fit the MIAs.

The MIA G&L tuners are different. I ordered a Hipshot D-tuner for a Tribute JB-2, and it took a little rigging to get it to fit. The actual tuning key looks the same, but the gears and screw placement are different.

How much rigging? A bit of tweaking and forcing or drilling new holes for screws and stuff?

Yes, I had to drill some new holes but the D-tuner covered the old ones, so the bass looked fine.

Hmm, I wonder if it would be a lot harder to cover things with the regular tuners. Maybe I'll just relax and try to love the tuners, they are certainly a lot better than the ones that were stock on my MIJ Jazz.

I was looking at mine last night an noticed there is an adjustment on the stock tribby tuner that will allow you tighten some. This may be on a lot of tuners and I just haven't noticed.

Yeah, mine has that as well, but they are real tight so I haven't needed it yet. Clearly there's nothing wrong with the tribby tuners, but I really like the smoothness of the Hipshots... Oh well, I'll just have to buy a MIA L-2k then...
