What is the favored material for shimming a neck? I got a deal today on a Squier VM Jazz, but it needs some set up...

How do you know it needs shimming?

Card stock.

Bit of sandpaper works.

Try setting everything up first, though.

You can use 1/3 of a business card, to raise the heel end of the neck. I've also used some veneer scraps, but they vary in thickness.

New playing cards are consistently 0.010" in thickness; I use 'em as shims in the workshop all the time.

Something that will adequately transmit string vibrations from the neck into the body and the pickup. Like human flesh.

Last time, I used part of a birthday card. That way, the well-wishes stay with me instead of being thrown away.

Sweet, innit?

A friend of mine used a slice of aluminum can. They can be cut with scissors.

Strings are way off ther board at the heel while getting buzz around the second fret. Tried to get the best setup , but just couldn't reach a happy medium . I used cardboard from a D'addario string box , two pieces . This fixed the issue, but i think I am going to go to 1 piece. The aliminum can intrigues me. What size should I cut it?

You need to get this bass to a pro.

There isn't ONE -- you'll find every opinion here. I've used -- and been happy with -- pretty much everything folks have already suggested...including tin-can...strips of sandpaper are generally my first option.

Probably won't take to a store.... I can set it up, just was wondering what the general consensus was on shimming materials. Bought it for 80$ , truss rod was totally loose, but not broken or stripped. Tightened some last night, not a lot. Probably just need to give the neck some time to settle in then gonna give it another quarter twist or so . May not have to shim it after all anyway.
