Toyota isn't much help in Michigan either for help with Toyota's but I'm counting on their being a helpful person in your life that is able and willing to help. Good Luck.

I want to tighten the truss rod on my Carvin AC40F.
Why?

It's hex shaped.
That it is.

Should I just go at it with needle nose plyers and try to turn it?
No.

or is there a tool for it?
Yes: a thin-walled socket.

In all honesty, because of the questions you've asked, I think you'd be best suited by taking this to someone who has the knowledge & tools to setup your bass.

Why? Because I want to straighten the neck. Thank you for your acknowledgement of my acknowledgement of the shape. Yes, I'll be needing a thin-walled socket. I'm fairly confident in my ability to turn the truss rod once the appropriate tool has been acquired. Thank you.

You should be able to get a "hash pipe wrench" at any guitar shop.

You're welcome.

It was your question about using a needle nose pliers, and your claim that you weren't mechanically inclined that led me to believe that you weren't capable of adjusting the trussrod; I see now that I was wrong.

Mea culpa.

I've been in a foul mood all day. I professed my own mechanical ignorance so your suggestion wasn't unreasonable. We can still be friends

GOOD FOR YOU for asking before acting! If you don't know whether there is a correct tool, it's a great idea to ask.

Just for general consumption:

Use ONLY the tool which is correct when working on an instrument. Doing anything else will at least damage the nut or screw, and at worst will make it unusable, resulting in expensive repairs or disappointing performance.

Your bass is worth (at least) hundreds of dollars. If you need to buy $20 worth of tools to adjust a truss rod correctly, DO IT. You'll have the tools for a lifetime and they will pay for themselves many times.

Then they don't get it. You can be the one who has an actual tool kit. You don't have to loan anything to them, as they'll either lose it or damage it. Too many people are ignorant about using tools today - don't be one of them.

I have a tool kit in each car, a wide array of tools in the garage, a tool kit upstairs in my guitar room, and another in the basement so I don't have to run around and get tools from another place in the house.
