What year p basses had lollypop shaped tuners?

Are these tuners "era-correct" for a 60's precision bass??

To my knowledge Fender P's didn't have ovals at all, but definitely NOT in the 60s.

HI

@ '66 and '67 for J's. Not sure if they used them on P's. Fender actually made those in house instead of buying them on the outside, thus the reason for the different shape

Well I haven't found ANY pic of a p bass with oval tuners....too bad...I like them! Will go for the long shaft reverse tuners...

Any other specifics to a 60's p bass? was the sonic blue color matched with tortoise shell guards??

Whats the deal with the...I believe is a strap button on the back of the headstock??

There was one original P on TB with lollipops. I think it was a '68. Fender used whatever they had in that period, they didn't waste any parts.

I don't know about the Sonic blue and Tort guard. My '66 is Oly white with Tort. That is a strap button on the back of the head. Back in the day, many guitar/bass players used that location. I don't know why. I have an early 70s Epiphone acoustic that has no button at all. You use one of those straps that ties around the headstock in front of the nut. The elephant ear tuners for the 60s had, as you alluded to, a much longer shaft than later years. I've not seen any period correct tuners from parts places. That's not to say they don't exist, but I've looked at several and I've never seen the exact duplication. You might do a search on here, as I seem to remember info in a previous thread probably within the last year.

I saw a pic of a sonic blue with a tortoise guard and it looks so good! kind of clashes..but in a good way! I'm not trying to duplicate an EXACT replica...maybe somehow period correct but..I mean, I can get original legit vintage stuff from ebay, but I wouldn't spend so much on a squire....I just want to give it that true 60's vibe to it...

I've seen the longer shaft tuners @ ebay..probably give those a try!

Ovals look so cool though!

I'm the original owner of a '66 P and it has traditional elephant ear tuners.
