What's a good affordable tuner for setups?

Sign in to disble this ad
I've been getting more and more into setups. All I currently have is a few Korg/Boss pocket tuners.

I was just looking for something accurate around $100. A pedal would be cool, but I could go either way.

Thanks.

I use a Korg CA 30 Chromatic and it does fine. The 6 features I want are..
1. Chromatic
2. Meter for fine work and LEDs for quick live tuning.
3. Audio tones (for rough tuning when stretching/setting strings).
4. Microphone (for acoustic instruments).
5. Ability to "hear" from 25 Hz to 1 kHz.
(This range takes care of most musical instruments)
6. Ability to calibrate for other than A = 440 Hz.
(Tuning to a piano or other instrument that may not be A = 440).

I think you'll find most tuners are more accurate than the amount of finger pressure you use.

I still use my Peterson StroboStomp, but I also have the ST-200 turbo.

Turbo-tuner - tuner of the future.

(With apologies to JimmyM).

Best tuner ever? Turbo-Tuner. And it's made in the U.S. of A!

Another vote for: ST-200 Stomp Box Strobe Tuner

I've previously used Sabine for 20+ years but this last year moved to the Turbo Tuner and have never been happier! Best Tuner I've ever used. Ridiculously accurate.

I have the Peterson Strobo stomp. I usually use my Boss TU2.

Turbo or Peterson. I have two of the Petersons but, if given a choice today, I'd go with the Turbo.

As good as the modern tuners are, I would never buy anything but the little Korg pocket tuners unless I needed the additional features of foot switching, bypass, etc. The cheap ones just work too well. I tuned our old spinet more than once with a $25 Korg. It sounded fine.

BTW, I use my iPhone for nearly all of my tuning needs. It works awesome!

The guy who plays guitar for us at church uses this:

It is too cool for school.

Just about any chromatic tuner that will display a note within 5 cents will do. I have a 20 year old Seiko that keeps on ticking.

Anyone know what manufacturer made those big strobe tuners? It was a black box with a detachable mic and every high school band room had one. I'd like to pick one up for a stroll down memory lane.

Edit: Nevermind. Found it. The Conn! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j_G66Bl_6KU

Spock has the Conn!

conn was bought by peterson, i believe. in any case, if you want a new mechanical strobe, there's peterson, and then there's peterson.

(oh, and another vote for the turbo; as accurate and responsive as any mechanical strobe, and only like $130!).
