probably one of two things, the fret brass is too soft, or playing technique, by rubbing/bending the strings too hard against the frets.

Do you use steel strings? If you do, those could possibly be wearing out your frets faster.

Are you sure your bass has "serious fret wear"? It's natural for frets to acquired marks that look like grooves.

I can't imagine any bass getting "serious fret wear" in four months. I play hard, often, and with Rotosound roundwounds, and have never seen anything happen like that in a matter of months.

Sounds like stainless roundwounds, which come on virtually all cheap basses and cut through fretwire like hacksaws.

Also technique.

They are made out of nickel/silver, not brass.

Fret wear is perfectly normal, even after a short time, depending on how you play. If you do a lot of bending, play hard, and use lighter gauge strings, it's possible you'll wear them out faster. As long as you don't have any serious grooves or have excessive buzzing on certain notes you're fine.

Fret wear is a function of time played. A hobby player may play a couple of hours a week. He will not see as much wear as a serious pro who plays thirty or more hours a week.

As mentioned before, technique can also have an effect. If one's technique is light there will be less wear. If grinding, bending, and beating is part of it expect to dress or refret more often.

None of this is unusual. Frets, much like the break pads on a car, are meant to wear out.
