Where can I find...

A fretless neck?

I found a pretty sweet used Fender Jazz at a local music shop for $300. I'm thinking about buying it and spending some money to modify it. The first thing I would want to do is install a fretless neck. The only problem, I'm not sure where I would find one, or what to look for.

Any suggestions?

Also, for $300 more, what kind of upgrades could I get for said bass. I know there's probably a million different options, but I just want to get a good idea of what's out there and for how much.

Thanks.

warmoth.com is your best friend in these situations

umm, for $300 you could get anything from really good hardware to an amazing bridge or nice pickups, its really just a matter of what you prefer

Definitely Warmoth. You can even design the neck to your exact specs! Inlays, nut, and everything!

Thanks for the tip. I've been checking out Warmoth and they definitely have an awesome selection. I have no idea what to look for in a fretless neck, so I guess I have some more research to do before I make a purchase.

I would personally go with an Ebony fingerboard. Ebony is harder than most other typical fingerboard woods(rosewood, maple) so it will stand up to wear much better. Ebony does have a distinctive tone though so try and play basses with different fingerboards before you make a decision.

Consider having the existing neck converted to lined fretless.

Have your pickup wiring modified to series/parallel with a push-pull pot.

Then play it.

No thanks on a lined fretless. Kind of defeats the purpose in my opinion.

how does that defeat the purpose of having a fretless..?

isnt the purpose of a fretless bass the smooth slides that you can't get from fretted basses? i would think lined fretlesses would actually be extremely helpful.. unless you just dont want it because you think it looks ugly or makes you look like a fretless noob

I've had experience on DB so lines feels like cheating to me. There are two reasons I want a fretless: 1) the sound and 2) to further my ability on my instrument. No lines presents a challenge whereas lines do not.

A HUGE +1 on Warmoth, but worth noting, inlay and nut options are limited.
For inlays, there are black, white, MOP and Abalone dots, or no inlays.
For nuts, there is the white Corian nut, or no nut.
