Where to get fretwork done in Austin TX area?

Sign in to disble this ad
Well, its finally time to have some long overdue fret leveling on my Hamer Cruise and a gu*tar of mine. I know some of you folks are brave enough to do this sort of thing yourself, but I've never done this before, and I'm not going to start on my Hamer.

Can anyone recommend a good shop to go to in the Austin area? I guess the big name in the area is Mark Erlewine's shop, but I honestly don't have any experience with anyone in the area, only having moved here a couple years ago.

Any recommendations? Any guess how much I'll be spending for this?

Thanks!

Surprised that there's no suggestions yet... I have never been to Austin but I see ads for Austin Bass Traders and Bass Emporium in Bass Player. Maybe they can point you in the right direction. Judging by their inventory, they should have some skilled help on hand.

I'd ask the guys at Bass Emporium or Guitar Resurrection. If they do not do it in house, they'll know who to refer you to.

Austin Vintage Guitar

I'm sure Erlewine Guitars would be a great place to have it done. They are up north at 4402 Burnet Rd. I've heard though that they're expensive and very busy (i.e. slow). I live south and would probably go to Austin Vintage Guitar at 1112 South Lamar Blvd. Great people, cool gear, best amp repair in town as well. Bass Emporium has exotic gear - fun to shop - but they don't do any repairs (bass or amp) at all.

+1 for Bass Emporium! I make a 3.5 hour drive there when I need something done that I can't do.

Thanks for all the feedback! It sounds like BE, Austin Vintage Guitar, and Erlewine are all safe bets.

Thunkinfunder, 3.5 hour drive? I guess I'm lucky. BE is less than 10 minutes from work, so I can run there over lunch when I need to.

All are great suggestions. I've has work done @BE. They're very good at what they do. But alas...turnaround time may be a factor.
