It's not the style, it's how you move people when you're playing will earn you respect IMO. |

If you like the pick then use it.
Go watch a couple of Gov't Mule videos with Allen Woody. He rocks with a pick!!!

I went to Bass pro shop and to my surprise they didn't have a single bass guitar.

| | | Thread not about playing with a pick, it's about applying a pickguard to protect the top of the bass from *whatever*.
You have had two replies with the link to Stewart MacDonald, that's the place to look for what you want. I think this post/link is the one: Quote:

Play whichever way gets you the sound you need for the song. Limiting your options is completely the wrong way to look at it. |

| | | | No need for pickgaurd on bass or guitar imo. The instruments look better without.

Personally, I don't need one. I play fingerstyle and IMO there's really no need for one unless you play really aggressively with a pick. Quote:

Most of it works best on non-porous gloss finishes. I tried some on an ABG and it just kept lifting.

| | | | I use my pickguard to hold my picks when I don't use them. I rarely ever use them, so there's just a pick sticking out of the guard on my P all the time.
On my pickguard-less bass, there is a divot in the finish under the G string from poor slapping technique. But it's all mojo:P

For me if theres nothing to cover a pickguard is useless and if its plastic it makes your instrument look like a toy or some retro **** |

That being said, my problem is with pickguards themselves. Most, in my opinion, are just ugly. |

Two of my favorite players, JPJ and Squire, play with picks. I respect them as much as I do Geddy. And I'm a *HUGE* Geddy fan!
Back to the question, though. I've tried to play with a pick and flat out stink at it. Even when I tried, though, I never struck the bass with the pick. I know nothing at all about the guitar. But I wonder if the pick guard is a stylish holdover from the guitar, which the electric bass is fashioned after. Dunno. I'm not that educated on the history of the bass or the mechanics of the guitar.
