WHy does my sound cut in and out...?

I'm not sure what it really is, could be anything but, my sound keeps changing mid riff for no identifiable reason. Generally it stays where I put the tone, and where it seems it is going to stay, but then alittle movement and then it cuts it out and my amp gets mysteriously louder and fuzzy and lacks lows. It may be a cable problem, I'm running a boss bass effect processor through the fx loop on my peavy combo 115, using a pair of kinda old cables, then I'm running my bass to the amp through a fairly new higher quality cable. I'll try running it with no fx loop, so how that fares, I'd guess its the fx loop, which I'd like to replace with individual pedals anyways, but hrm. It might have to do with my active electronics, but I do have the input for the amp on active setting. This is probably something I can figure out, but if anyone can identify it as a flaw with the boss ME-50B or something, that'd be appreciated.. Thanks.

it could be the jack on your bass. if it works correctly without the fx loop, then it wouldnt be your jack, it would be those cables or even possibly the pedals themselves.

Start by simplfying your signal chain (bass -> cable -> amp) and then adding pieces to see if you can isolate where the problem is. I had to replace the jack on my Sadowsky after a short time because of cutting out. I actually thought it might have been an amp but just the jack. I also have a compressor that I no longer use that does crackle from time to time. Took a bit to find that in the pedal set up I was using at the time.
