Widening A Fret Channel...

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello my Fellow Bass Brothers And Sisters!

I got a quick question for you!

There is a wonder defretting tutorial in the back of Bass Player's "The Fretless Bass" book and I thought I would give it a go! In the steps Dan Erlewine uses a .031 dremel bit and a router attachment to winden the fret channel to fit a .040 black binding strip. Now I have the same black binding strips but I don't have the bread to get a dremel. He mentions that a "Fine Tooth Hacksaw Blade" would also work, but he makes no mention of the right size. I would assume its a .031 blade as well but I have no idea what size would work or if there is another alternative?

Can anybody recommend anything?

Thanks Again!

YES. Do yourself a service and do NOT use anything but a manual method of cutting & sizing a nut. I have fitted a few in my time and I use a small selection of very fine steel files and a quality measuring tool.
You can get into a great deal of sorrow by using a motorized tool.

I make my cuts in a "V" section rather than a "U" section as it will fit more string sizes. You have an angle rather than a "wall" at the nut cuts, thus you place less stress on bone or other material that may crack.

I dont think youre following what his thread was about. He was talking about widening fret slots, not sloting a nut.

I would use a blade slightly smaller than the binding strip and sand the binding to fit in the slot perfectly.
