Wiggly jack and crooked nuts

Sign in to disble this ad
I have an Ibanez SR655 that has a barrel-style jack, recessed, strat-like, into the body. It's loose. The wall of the control cavity where the jack enters is cut at a slight inward angle, preventing the nut holding the jack from sitting flush. The nut is as tight as it can be, but the jack still has a fair amount of play.

The cavity wall looks something like this: \ Now, picture a nut against that wall, vertically: |\ The top half of the nut is tight against the wall; the bottom half doesn't even touch.

I'm hesitant to re-cut that portion of the cavity wall straight, as it's a relatively thin area, due to the recessed jack placement.

Any ideas?

My mental jpeg conversion is not operating. A couple of pictures would help.

Sounds like the jack threads are stripped and the nut is crossed threaded. You'll need to take the jack off and either re-thread it or buy a new one. In other words you'll need to hold your nut and then jack off.

Try a couple lock washers oriented so the 'thick' sides deal with the angled part. Don't tighten them too much as they'll then go flat.
