Will Fender keys fit a Squire (P)?

I love my Squire (yup, cheap-o p bass affinity), but these keys are just plain wimpy....

(yeah the covers are off). I'd like to replace them with something like Fender USA 70's Reissue Bass Tuners or the Fender Dlx Lite Bass Flat Cloverleaf Keys. Will they work? The Fenders seem "beefier", and that's what Im after. TIA.

I used my old squier keys on a fender pbass special neck, the screw holes didn't line up but everything including the ferules fit. Don't know if that helps.

Even if you need to modify anything, it's only a Squier - some would say one of the ideal instruments to learn how to mod

I would think you would have no problem putting in Fender MIA/MIM P or J Bass tunning keys. I have even seen them on e-bay for really cheap. You might find that that 4 screw holes might not line up exactly. Your best bet might just be call a local luthier as he could tell you for sure and chances are might have a set sitting around that he would put in for cheap.

The screw holes don't bother me....I can drill new ones. Basically the ferules is what I'm wondering about. The better Fender ones have much larger ferules....that's one of the things I'm after. I should be able to drill out the existing holes for larger ones, right?

It's a really pain in the ass to drill out smaller holes with a bigger bit since you don't have a middlepoint. You'll have to plug them (using woodplugs made with a special drill) and then drill in the middle of the plug with a fostner (is that correct?) bit if you want it perfect.

The ferules from my squier fit into my fender, no mod, so it should work the other way around, right?!
