Question Wood finishing repairs

Sign in to disble this ad
Good day everyone.
I have just purchased this bass at a garage sale, real cheap. It is an old peavey. The guy I bought it from said he is asking $10. only because it is water damaged. But the only thing I could see was the rusted part since the rest of the Bass is covered with some hard finish like polyurethane, including the finger board. I need to take off all this goop and expose the fretboard again. I was told that if I use a chemical stripper that the Bass would be ruined! As I see it for $10 it is a worthy project, with everything else being straight and true with all pots working. What do you think TalkBass community?

It's hard to tell anything without seeing the bass. Usually those basses do have a thick poly coating. Chemical strippers won't take that off. You have to either melt and scrape it off with a heat gun (not a good idea on the neck) or sand it off. I don't know what sort of water damage there is. If the neck got soaked by being submerged it could be ruined and warp on you. Electronics may or may not be ruined.

But for $10 how can you go wrong?

I remember when I was about 14 a friend of mine from school offered to sell me an old acoustic guitar he had at home with a broken headstock. I was going to pass on it. I knew nothing about guitars then. Luckily my Dad overheard and took a look. He pulled out $5 and gave it to the guy. It was an old genuine Martin. He, being a woodworker with some experience making violins, had no trouble fixing it. It's a good thing he was also a guitar player.

Post some pictures if you can.
