Sign in to disble this ad
Hi I have a fretless bass that i love but is becoming very worn out in a few areas that I tend to play alot giving those areas some buzz...when i take off the strings i can see and feel the indentations of years of play with roundwounds (i hate flats) Is it possible to fix this neck or should i try to invest in a replacement? thanks for any help

If it's not too bad it can be *dressed*- a straight-edged scraper is drawn lengthwise down the fingerboard, levelling(fore-to-aft, not removing the radius)& removing divots/grooves. I've done it a couple of times; it's not difficult but it's also easy to jack things up worse if you're not careful. take it to a shop- an estimate shouldn't cost anything but your time.

Given that is thick enough, the fingerboard can be dressed. This is roughly the same procedure used when dressing frets. But rather than level- crown-and polish, it is level-radius-and refine. Just like a fret dress, it is a game that is played out in thousandths of an inch.
