Worn truss rod nut, phillips
Neck has Truss rod nut's stuck and doesn't move and......
Nut is really bad figure.
Anyone has solution to fix it or take it off to replace ?
Nut doesn't look like steel but kinda weak as brass.
Put a big flat head screwdriver in there. Looks like ish, but not too bad to work with.
Folks see an X and wanna use a Phillips head, but it's the wrong tool for the job.
A StewMac article had a tip about a stuck truss rod nut. Heat the end of a screw driver and allow the heat to transfer to the nut. One might have to do this multiple times until the nut absorbs some heat. The heat will expand the nut and hopefully it'll break free.
An offset screwdriver works best. You want one that has a slot-head blade on both ends. This will allow you to work with 90 degree turns.
Don't get one with a phillips head on one end and a slot-head blade on the other as those will only allow you to do 180 degree turns.
The top one in the 4-piece set as sold by sears is the one you want.
A #3 Phillips will work the best. Because it is a four bladed, versus the flat tip, you'll have more contact area. Also, the heat thing sounds like it has some potential, and the #3 will conduct better...and maybe a drop of penetrating oil?...And if worse comes to worse, an Easyout (a reverse threaded, tapered tap) may be in order
You are NOT to use a Phillips!!!. NEVER. It was never intended for Phillips!
I don't care if it works, it is simply the wrong tool for the job!! Period. Large flat blade and the offsets work well.
A soldering iron would be more effective in expanding the nut by heat than heating a screw driver.
After you get it out, replace it with one of these ...
Thank you All.
I was not brave enough to turn the nut.
I used 3/8" blade flat screw driver and I work like offset since I don't have real one.
Nut's naughty-worn (kekek) and fill the hole to lock it.
Eventually nut scraped some wood but that works :)
You should replace it as well.
