Yamaha BB300 replacement tuners?

Sign in to disble this ad
I recently picked up a bass I've owned before: a BB300 from 1989. It's a fantastic bass, but it has one problem: the tuners arent what they used to be. This is the main problem:

So I want to replace these tuners. But, since it's Yamaha, of course they have off-sized tuners. So my question is obvious: is there any brand that produces replacement tuners for these?

And, since I'm on the subject of pimpin' a bass: the bridge has gone rather dirty, how can I clean that? Silver polish perhaps?

Lightbulb Hmmm...

That happens with those tuners. There is a sleeve on the tuning stalk that will change the tuner tension - the basses came with a little wrench to adjust them.

One of the tuners on my old 1986 BB300 was busted so I replaced the set - I don't remember which brand it was, but they were a direct replacement with no modification to the bass.

That all said, if the problem can't be adjusted out shoot me your address and I'll send you a couple Yamaha tuners from the same era that should work fine for you.

As far as the bridge, I'd suggest a replacement. They were OK in function but once they corrode there is not a lot that can be done to clean them up.

I'd try tightening the sleeve if they feel loose. Those tuners look pretty good to me.

i need a 4 screw bb 300 tuner gear & retaining screw

I have recently gotten a BB300 with tuners that have 4 screws holding each tuner in place. It has no serial number so i cant give the year. I need the gear wheel and retaining shaft screw for repair of one tuner, as well a needing a new nut. Any suggestions on replacement acquisitions?

They are good tuners. I had a BB400S fretless once that had the same tuners and they worked fine. Somehow, these have gone to meet their maker after 22 years. By tightening the sleeve, you mean tightening the big screw? I tried that, but they're kinda stuck, it appears. I have some basses that have a hex screw on the side, but as you can see on the pics these lack those screws.

@BritFunk: I've noticed Gotoh makes the GB11, do you reckon they'll fit? Of course I might try hitting Yamaha a message, but I've tried that with another problem before, and they basically say they're the only ones producing these specific parts, and you can buy them at Yamaha for a ridiculous price (Gotoh GB-7 copies with a Yamaha brand on 'em for about $70 each, IIRC).
If you have a set of tuners left I'd love 'em...

If you look at the tuning shaft you'll see a small hole in the side - that is the contact point for the wrench. Turn clockwise to tighten.

This has come up before a time or two:

70s Yamaha BB - tuner slipping. Help?

Yamaha BB tuner wrench ? Anyone know where to buy ?
