1961 Fender Precision F/S, Firemist Gold Nitro Refin

Sign in to disble this ad
ATT: Price Dropped to €4700! I want this one to sell before I long as every time I pick it up it gets harder to let go, it's such an amazing player and tone monster.

All original Pre-CBS Precision, lovely pro nitro refin in rarely seen Firemist Gold. Weight is 3,9kg or 8.6lbs, and the balance on a strap is perfect. According to Brian Barrett at the Low End, from whom I recently bought this bass, it was refinished many times by the father and son who were the only owners of the bass before he acquired it. All the contours are as original, including the router hump, which wasn't sanded away as often happens. Brian said the Boston luthier legend Jim Mouradian went over the instrument and loved it; I can understand why.

The neck wasn't ever re-finned, and is super smooth with no lacquer left on the back. Original decal and frets, which are lightly grooved from years of play. If you leave flats on it you can get away without a refret for a long time, but if you want to use SS rounds you will want to refret sometime it down the line. The neck is arrow straight and super stiff, an absolute joy to play. Absolutely no ramping or flip, very rare for Fenders this old. It has a beautiful dark Brazilian slab fretboard, edges rolled smooth.

The nitro pickguard has a small crack at the output jack and screw next to it, but is still in one piece, and has only shrunk a little bit.

Electronics are perfect, and the pickup is strong and clean, very powerful sounding. The bass has nickel rounds on it and the tone is pure and exquisite; perfectly balanced and with plenty of bottom, growl, and lovely singing highs.

No case, the one in the photos belongs to another bass. I will pack the bass in a cheapo generic gigbag, double boxed and over-padded.

As a player it's a no-issue gig or studio ready monster, perfectly set up and in superb playing condition. I would love to keep it, but I bought two '60s Fenders at the same time, and opted to keep the other one, a '66 J. It was a very hard decision to make but IME it's easier to find a great P than a great J and the J is a special one which I can't let get away. Besides, I already own a '66 P and a great Fullerton re-issue so this P is a luxury I can't afford.

Price is €4700 firm, + exact cost of shipping using whichever method you prefer. Pickup in person if you'd like, and I can also meet up at any music shop in Southern Switzerland if you'd like to try the bass out beforehand. Sorry for the lousy iphone pictures, they don't do justice to the colours of this instrument. I can send better ones if you'd like. Thanks for looking!

Thanks knuppe, it IS as good as it gets, this is one of those basses that gave the pre-CBS Fenders such a good reputation. Unlike the majority of '60s Fender necks there is absolutely zero ramping or flip to the neck, it is perfectly straight along the whole length.

The re-fin means you can gig it anywhere with it without worrying about every scratch and ding, a perfect player's vintage P!

Bump! I made the mistake of gigging this bass, just a monster. Now I want to keep it but can't afford too.

The neck is absolutely the stablest and best feeling P neck I've played, and the tone is truly exceptional in the mix.

Oh well, I've been truly bitten by this bass, decided to take it off the market, so it's no longer for sale.
