1988 MUSIC MAN STINGRAY. BIRDSEYE MAPLE NECK. TRANS RED.

Sign in to disble this ad
1988 Musicman Stingray 100% original in translucent red with the most astounding birdseye maple neck you have seen!
Comes with the original black case, brand new DR strings, extra set of Sadowsky flats and three pickguards: Transparent, White and mint green. All of them looks amazing in this bass.
The late 80's represented a transition era for Musicman, Ernie Ball had acquired the company but was still using up Leo Fender era stock. These transition era basses probably represent the best “bang for your buck” these days, all the desirable pre-Ernie Ball features but without the huge price tag of the late 70's (close to 3000 euros in good condition).
This bass is not a common Stingray -vintage or not- so is truly lightweight , has an incredible one piece body and is finished in a rare translucent red over an ash body with a heavily figured maple neck to die for.

It carries all the desirable features, full size bridge with the original mutes, 4 bolt neck with bullet truss rod, skunk stripe, metal battery cover, B02 serial number and of course a stunning piece of maple for that neck. Whatever anybody will tell you, Ernie Ball don’t make them like this any more at any price.
For a bass just hitting 21 years old it is in really good condition, one small chip through the lacquer and a few small dimples on the back, otherwise it is really clean.

The neck is superb, frets have 95+% left in them & the truss rod works as you would expect. If you think the appearance of these transition models is superior to the current, very anaemic looking version... wait till you hear it. Try as I might, I cannot get a modern ‘ray to sound as full or as rich as this one. Think Bernard Edwards on Le Freak or Louis Johnson on Stomp, it has that slightly earthy, rounded twang to it with a lot of thump underneath, not the sizzling, hi-fi & slightly anorexic twang that is becoming so prevalent these days.

1695 EUROS + SHIPPING TO EUROPE.

You know, you could describe it as a fine bass, without bashing the current production models.

After twenty years collecting and playing Pre and post Fender era Stingray and having no less that 27-28 of these basses in total I have sold the newest in my gear some weeks ago for a good reason: A black/rosewood neck 2008 and a white/maple 2009 one so I know VERY WELL those new models and I only can reasset my words, they're hi-fi, weighty and inexpressive. That's my humble opinion and if you find some info even in the EBMM forum you'll see I'm not the only one thinking that way.
I don't understand your public commentary, send a private if you have any questions but please don't spoil this thread so we already know your great knowledge of these basses:

i think he was complimenting your bass, man.

EDIT:
also, i've owned an EBMM stingray 5 from the same era and wow - the birdseye in those necks are beautiful.
