Here's the funny thing. If I had simply read that there was going to be an ACG version of a jazz bass I think my reaction would have been pretty meh.

It seems most boutique builders have relented to what I imagine is a fair amount of pressure to offer one, not to mention all the companies for whom a retro or "super" jazz is their bread and butter. It's a pretty full market.

And yet - I totally want one.

I can't even really explain it. I'm NOT a boutique jazz guy at ALL. In theory it isn't really my thing but these J types check a box I didn't even know I had.

Beautiful. The perfect combination of what I love about jazzes and ACGs. I'm not sure how you do it Alan but I hope you sell a ton of them.

And when I've saved up enough pennies maybe you consider making me a matching set of one of them and a "P-type" as well.

Just noticed the 3+1 headstock on the 4s. Nice.

Alan, if you're reading, are these J's all 34"?

Hi Jared
I have had my reservations regarding a jazz type bass. As you mentioned there is no shortage of them and time will tell if this is one to many.
Alan

Sure, but the other viewpoint is that there are so many of them because there's such a huge market for such instruments.

And I can totally understand why. A boutique jazz gives the quality and craftsmanship of a handcrafted instrument but in a recognizable and easily accepted package.

And it's really just an evolution of guys modding their Fender Jazzes when aftermarket pickups, bridges and preamps became widely available anyway.

I think they'll be a successful line for you because IMO you're approaching it the right way. Without mentioning names, I recently played a boutique jazz from a company that otherwise does pretty non-traditional instruments. It was a fine instrument, but it was completely disconnected from the rest of their product line and didn't really stand out in any way despite being a very expensive bass. It was simply a well built, traditional jazz bass with aftermarket electronics. My immediate thought was that I'd rather have Nino Valenti build me a bass and I'd save a bunch of money too. And that's exactly why that type of a market is tough to break into.

But as I mentioned before, you've really incorporated a LOT of ACG touches to these instruments and I think that's a wonderful thing. They've got your stamp on them and that separates them from the rest. Again, I hope you sell a thousand of them because they look fantastic and I'm sure they play and sound just as good.

I like the look of the Js and the Recurve 6... I'll have to visit this forum more often!

Two questions for you:

1) You seem to do a lot of zero-radius fingerboards. What do you feel the pros and cons of these are?

2) Is there much of an upcharge for custom spacings and scale lengths (if one were to do, say, a 33", 19mm sixer or fretless fiver)?

Nice looking work!

Hi
Sorry for the slow reply I seemed to have missed your post until now.

From a personal perspective I used to play six strings and I could never see the point of taking the B string that further away from my left hand. I also think that a radius on a bass is a through back to DB and guitar. I can see the point on a guitar but not in the bass. One of the first things I did when I started building was to try a flat board on a 6 string bass. I found I liked it. I then tried it on a fretless 5 and I liked it even more. So when you start out you have no customers so you tend to build what you want. So that is why I started with the flat boards, next came the asymmetric neck profile in conjunction with the flat board. As to the benefits,a lot falls down to personal preference. I find it more comfortable as do a lot of my customers. I find the a good setup is easier to achieve. Down side, you may find it feels strange if you are coming from something like a Fender with a 7/9" radius, this however soon goes. Other than that I am not aware of any real downsides again it comes down to preference.

No up charge if I have all ready got the neck template and not much more if I have not. I have built quiet a few 33" scale basses with another 4 on the books at the moment. I can do the following scales at the moment.

30.5,31.5,32,33,34,34.5,35 and 36. Done all but the 36". Done string spacings from 15mm to 20mm.

Mmmmmm, satinwood.... I've got a Taylor acoustic guitar with Nigerian satinwood back and sides that sounds like mahogany but looks like quilted maple. It's on my list of possible woods for a custom build!

How do you find it sounds as a wood for bass, or is the alder body a more important component?

Hi
Not used it before so can't say at the moment. It is pretty hard and heavy so I would expect it to increase the attack compared to the Alder on it's own.

I keep coming back to look at that J-Type, I really hope it's NOT a 33" scale bass...
