Let's do a thread about great songs with great basslines that 99% of the population has probably never heard.

As a rule, let's make sure that they are available on iTunes, or whatever your favorite site is to purchase music. I'm into buying music, so please don't recommend something that can't be purchased.

I'll do three. Two of which are on the same album. As a side note, these two albums are two of the best albums I own.

Song (Album) -- Artist -- Bass Player
Oh No The Radio (Owsley) -- Owsley -- Millard Powers
Millard is best known for his work with Ben Folds, and is one of the most underrated bass players around. He and Will Owsley are in Amy Grant's band (as well as Shania Twain from time to time), but they are both power-pop superstar songwriters. This tune has a truly inspired bass line!!
Sonny Boy (Owsley) -- Owsley -- Millard Powers
Some of the fills will make you pee your pants. This album was nominated for a Grammy for the enigineering. Will recorded, produced, mixed, engineered, and mastered the whole thing in his home studio. He is a brilliant musician. I saw these two along with drums and keys perform My Old School by Steely Dan flawlessly!!
Carry On (The Chinese Album) -- Spacehog -- Royston Langdon
These guys are most famous for the song "In The Meantime" (and the fact that Royston is married to Liv Tyler), but this song is from their follow up album. The whole album is brilliant. Royston's playing here is fantastic.

I hope this thread continues. It's nice to learn about great songs without having to wade through albums and albums of duds first.

Stonehenge - Awakening Stick - Don't recall the bassist's last name at the moment and my cd is 30 miles away so I can't look it up.

Simple, yet awesome bassline. The cd is available at cdbaby. You can check them out at www.myspace.com/awakeningstick - the rest of the songs they have up there are good, but Stonehenge is my favorite. No, it has nothing to do with Spinal Tap.

Supa Scoopa and Mighty Scoop (Welcome to Sky Valley) - Kyuss (Scott Reeder)
Sabbath-esque stoned nonsense but in a good way. After Nick Oliveri left, Kyuss needed an old-school groover like Reedo to keep the band on the high they were after Blues for the Red Sun. This song is a great example of Kyuss giving each member room to do what they like but still keeping the song together. It's begging to be kept within the context of the album though.

Paradise on Earth (Saved By Magic) - Brant Bjork and the Bros. (Dylan Roche)
Tasty little pop song for a sunny day. Dylan never feels the need to wonder off but plays more like a blueser - keeping time with some minimal funky licks while the guitars and drums push and pull against each other. That's not to say it isn't a great song to play.

Black Mastermind (Spine of God) - Monster Magnet (Joe Calandra)
Hawkwind style space jam. Monster Magnet's bass playing is always in the shadow of the guitar solos and the singer's antics but being under-appreciated hasn't stoped them laying down some imaginative stuff.
