If you don't have it already, you need a copy of the Elton John album 11-17-70, recorded live, 40 years ago today. If you already have it, crank it today! Hear the late Dee Murray tearin' it up!

I listened to those early EJ albums so much that I think I subconsciously absorbed Dee's note choices and creativity into my concept of bass playing.

About your sig: How'd you come to own Dee's Steinberger?

It's playing on my iTunes right now. I was fortunate to see Dee live on the Yellow Brick Road tour. Awesome player for sure! (Hard to believe it's been 40 years since this was recorded)

Wow. Cool. I only have it on vinyl. Haven't given it a listen in quite awhile.

Besides Murray's great playing, Elton voices the bass really well. Your Song is about the voicing and the bass movement is beautiful.

I had the chance to meet and interview Dee in 1969(?) when he and Nils were touring with Spencer Davis. They played at my school dance!! He, they was really kind to me.

As for his note choice... yes, GREAT, but keep in mind that he was following Reggie's left hand on those fantastic inversions.

+1 I first heard it when I was 15 and it was brand new, and that was my first exposure to Elton John. I thought he and the band were pretty rockin'.

The 11-17-70 Album

I practically wore that album out I played it so much. Dee Murray was one of the all time greats! He is all over the neck on that particular album. Holy smokes! What a great bassist he was. He provided me with alot of influence back then.
