One from Snooks Eaglin has got to be in there somewhere, hard to choose which one, one from his blacktop era most likely.

You absolutely NEED Son House. Once you have that, expand to Little Walter, Sonny Boy Williamson II, and Blind Willie McTell.

Depends on what you're looking for in terms of blues. If you like the older, straight ahead blues from back when blues was really blues (what can I say? I'm a purist ), anything by Tommy Johnson, Robert Johnson, Son House, or Skip James would do you fine. The list goes on, but those are some of my favorites.

If you're more into later stuff, Howlin' Wolf, Buddy Guy, Muddy Waters, Lightnin' Hopkins, etc. are all good. Again, a long list that only gets longer as you get into later eras.

Once you get into the '60s, that's where it explodes. Hendrix, Bluesbreakers, Butterfield Blues Band, Yardbirds, Cream, B.B. King, Freddie King, Albert King, Led Zeppelin, yadda yadda. Depends on how deep into blues rock you want to get.

So basically, there's way too much out there to be able to effectively recommend just five of anything without knowing more specifically what you're after. The good news is that you won't be short of stuff to check out.

Any of the Muddy Waters stuff that Johnny Winter produced. Can't recall the names right now except for "Hard Again". Great recordings and killer performances.

+1 on Hoodoo Man Blues by Jr. Wells

also...

The Natch'l Blues - Taj Mahal
Serves You Right to Suffer - John Lee Hooker

Not to be a Debbie downer but I disagree with the Electric Mud album. The songs and the playing just aren't there. It was a couple of psychedelic rock guys on that album and just didn't do Muddy justice. Muddy also famously hated this album. The album that followed Electric Mud, Fathers and Sons (mentioned above), is killer and features our collective bass hero Duck Dunn.

+1 on Andrew Jones' list. I'd add BB King's Live At The Regal.

For white boy blues my faves are still the first two Fabulous Thunderbird albums, Girls Go Wild and What's The Word? They used to be available as a CD set, not sure if they still are.
