6 string bass and cello duet video

Hi all... I just thought I would post a duet titled "Flick" that I wrote for my fiance and me. This is one of our first passes at it, but I think it captures the idea. Yoonie is still reading the music off of the ground, and I think the tune needs a little more forward motion.

I'm using my '93 Carvin LB76 that I dropped a Bart pre and pups into. I'm going direct through a UA Solo 610. The cello is mic'd with an AT 4050 through a Portico 5017. We have headphones on to hear the BG as I don't have an amp on in the room. This isn't my main bass but the close string spacing is great for the chordal playing.

I had fun writing this for us and am in the process of getting more material together for us. I like the challenge of writing for 2 bass instruments. Which is why i'm posting this here. Please don't skewer me with "you should just play guitar."

I'm fully aware of what actually makes money! You can however skewer me on the cheesy video effects I have used in imovie.

Absolutely beautiful. I love to see musicians use the 6 string bass to its full advantage. I just reinforces how I just dont understand why a musician would deny themselves these types of musical possibilities with one instrument simply because "theres no money past the 5th fret" or whatever crap they say.

Beautiful cello playing as well...keep it up!

Great stuff - I enjoyed that. The only thing I'd skewer you on is that songs are, by definition, sung. This would be a composition or a piece. Sorry, nitpick syndrome won't go away.

As for the forward motion you mentioned, what I get is a sense of a bit too much diatonicism and a real sense of one player backing off for the other and vice versa. You could overcome that with a bit more interplay (such as when you drop the chords and play lines about half-way in) - obviously both of you are capable of playing that style; it's just a question of writing it out if it's in your head.

A few less "conventional" voicings (out of key, but complimentary) would help to bring out some movement too, I suspect. Sorry if this comes across as critical - it's a really fine piece and no doubt you'll compose many more, so just keep doing it. The mix between the two instruments is fantastic.

Awesome SONG! I loved both the composition and the playing (bass and cello). Your fiance is an excellent cello player!
