I'd like to know what do you mean with "sweet". In the meantime (and according to my conception of the word in a rock context) I have two recommendations:

"Love Is Like Oxygen" by SWEET
"More Than A Feeling" by Boston

Both awesome 70's rock songs.

Maybe "The Logical Song" by Supertramp, Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Free Bird" and "Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen.

Some of those might be late 60s, but they're fun tunes. One-hit wonders.

Only from the third LP "Women And Children First" (1980). VH and VH II are from 1978 and 79, respectively.

Anything from Aerosmith's first few albums. (Now there is a band that need to start taking drugs again. The early stuff is awesome, anything after about 82 is pop drivel)

Geez...you're taking me back!
Why not R. Dean Taylor's "Indiana Wants Me" or Looking Glass' "Brandy" or Lee MIchaels' "You Know What I Mean"?

I recently picked up an Ides Of March disc...interesting group; they were very young & very influenced by what they were hearing on the current Pop scene. As a result, "Vehicle" sounds exactly like something BS&T would do; there's other cuts on the disc that sound like CS&N(IIRC).
Their singer(Jim Peterik) went onto further fame with Survivor("Eye Of The Tiger", etc).

Occasionally, I'll hear "Ode To Billie Joe" on the Oldies station...very minimalist, very well done, very powerful.

That's "Lido Shuffle". "Lowdown" would be another good one.

I think Van Halen was a late '70s entry('78 or so?). I used to spend some free time playing pinball between classes...my stooge friends would always play "Runnig With The Devil" just to annoy the Hell outta me! This had to be between '76-'80.

Strange Sabbath choice!

Just take all of 'Sabotage'.
And 'In For The Kill' by Budgie.

BJ Thomas "Hooked on a Feeling"
America "Sister Golden Hair"
Starland Vocal Band "Afternoon Delight"
Paul McCartney "Silly Love Songs"
Doobie Brothers "Long Train Running"
Steely Dan "Peg"
John Lennon "Imagine"
The Who "Squeeze Box"
Heart "Magic Man" (70s?)
The Hues Corporation "Rock the Boat"
Gerry Rafferty "Baker Street"
Bo Donaldson and the Heywoods "Billy, Don't Be A Hero"
Bay City Rollers "Saturday Night"
Todd Rundgren "Hello It's Me"

Jim, as you mention these, I also miss the "regional" quality of the music. The 70's featured the last of the different regional culture(s) that America had before music industry consolidation took over.

Would any of those songs be recorded today without a drop-D?

"All Right Now" by Free. Another terrific minimalist composition that had the right amount of notes.
