Acoustic Masada

They are coming to the Jazz Fest over here (thursday) and I had orignally planned on seeing Bireli Lagrene w/ Alain Caron Big Band and Patricia Barber but Patricia Barber is sold out, so if I wanted to, I could go to another show. all I've heard is the one clip of Electric Masada on YouTube... I LOVED most of it except for the squealing sax noise he seems to do just a little too much for my tastes (although their transitions are absolutely sick, and the band is very talented). I'm wondering if for many of you it would be worth the 63 bux it would cost me to see them and what I should expect from their acoustic counterparts? They seem to get quite a bit of praise.

Here's the electric link. Love the groove on this song http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pJkmT...h=marc%20ribot

I'm not particularly fond of Marc Ribot, but the rest of the band sounds great.

I'm a HUGE Zorn's fan and I highly reccommend you to go to the concert ... it'll worth every penny! They'll also perform in my city (Catania, Sicily, Italy) on 10th July ... can't wait!
Three years ago Zorn came here with Electric Masada too: Masada music pushed to the limits ... absolutely stunning! The quartet is what started it all and can't be missed. You'll hear great solo improvisation (duets too) from both JZ and Dave Douglas, the great Greg Cohen (truly a first class bassist) and the IMMENSE Joey Baron on drums!
For your pleasure, expect less sax squealings from JZ here (I'll miss 'em ) but anyway I bet they'll have the usual 10-15 squareheads go away after 5 minutes!

As concerning Electric Masada the new CD "Live at the Mountains of Madness" is, if possible, even more intense than 50th Birthday Vol.4. Check it out!

if they've got trevor dunn or greg cohen on bass, you're in for a treat.
the music is experimental, so you'll get some of that screeching sax/guitar stuff... but the grooves are definitely solid. i'd definitely recommend you see it!

I picked up Vol. 4 today. I really only listened to the first song so far but skimmed through the other to get a taste of what I'm in for... it's somethin alright, I think I dig! LOVE Ribot!

Sarge, did you go to the show? They played here in Catania two days ago and it was a BLAST!
They were very inspired and played at stellar levels taking the audience by hand into a wonderful musical journey!
Joey Baron and Greg Cohen proved once again to be a great rhythm section and Zorn showed the usual command on everything, in addition to all the melodies, squealings and various craziness comin' out of his sax!
The audience responded in a very positive way and the excitement all around was so high that the band came out granting two bis (not so usual for JZ)!
After the show and a quick wash the band members patiently dealt with all the people still around to have CD booklets and tickets signed. Despite all the stories I've heard about John Zorn being not a simple person to deal with, I had the immense pleasure to shake hands with him and to express him personally how fond I am of his work. He was extremely nice, smiley, friendly as he exchanged a couple of words with me and my wife.
Guys, I'm on my forty but I'm not embarassed to tell you I was happy like a kid in a candy store!

That sounds super cool! Unfortunately I didn't end up going to the show as I just didn't want to spend the 70ish bucks it would have cost me. I went to alot of free shows and Alain Caron/Bireli which i paid for. some free shows were great! Joh Jorgenson killed (but the sound guy shoulda been doing less smoking and better sound work) I think the stand out show was Catherine Potter. It an indian bengali type jazz/classical fusion, their set was outstanding! I would strongly suggest checking her out.
