Check it out on youtube! The chili peppers have definitely evolved musically, and with the comments I see on the videos, it's kind of a hit and miss song to the fans. I like it, and the bass is catchy. Simplistic, but still fun to play.
What do you think of the new song?
I'd post a link, but the video's are getting taken down left and right so it the link wouldn't work after a few hours anyway.

The production also sounds like junk. The George Harrison guitars in the chorus and the silly reverby solo are worthless. Frusciante wasn't technically much of a player but I dug his melodic sense.
Cool bass groove but an overall forgettable tune, like the majority of the RHCP catalog IMO. |

| | | | I am very very very very mixed on how I feel about this song (and currently very annoyed because I had deleted my entire post here x( ). I almost want to like just to like it because I have always loved the Chili Peppers from when I first started to listen to them. This song does seem like it is a more radio friendly jam, and hopefully the good stuff has not been released yet. Apparently Flea has been taking some theory courses and will be playing piano/keys on a song or so. This could be good and cool, or bad and upsetting. Flea is a great musician, so I know he has a great sense of music, but piano takes a lot of work to get good at. So I impatiently wait to hear it, with not rush at all.
There seems to be a huge chunk of something missing on this track though. I cannot say it is the lack of John, because Hillel, and Navaro had their own feel to it, and to base everything on one track is foolish.
The chorus though is just weak. It does not seem like one of those sing-a-long types that you really just want to get into when driving somewhere.
Even Flea's bassline was not all that impressive to me. It didn't have that good old Flea drive behind it. It sounds pretty basic to me for a man of his skill.
Also, it sounds too much like Snow (Hey oh) and that is fine, cause it is all Chili Peppers, and the Peppers will sound like the Peppers... but that is not a favorite song of mine. I miss The Uplift Mojo Party Plan, Blood Sugar Sex Magick, One Hot Minute, Californication, and such. Those had that real amazing songs on it.
Hopefully I will not continue to feel this mixed on the rest of the album. I hope that this being their single is a good sign... As in, a single released with a weak hook could show that they are not out to please the radio people, but the true fans. The only part of the song that really sticks with me is the bass line (I know, cliche for the bassist). But the guitar tracks did nothing for me, the vocals were pretty monotone, and drums are not something that would drag me into a song as much as the rest of it. |

| | | | the lyrics are lacking a bit without john but I really love that bassline. It's still better than 95% of mainstream music (anything else you would hear on the radio).
I have a feeling that this will fit in a lot more and make more sense within the album. I will ALWAYS love this band, so go ahead and call me a fanboy I guess.

good for then making money off playing what they want to, and i'm jealous of that.... but..... blegh. guh. NO THANK YOU. |

I feel one of the major shortcomings of the song is the lack of John's backing vocals, but other than that, I think as a single it could make it commercially, in which case it will have succeeded as a money making draw. I think the rest if the album will have a different vibe, if the track names are anything to go by.

There is nothing wrong with the song it's just not very good. It's forgettable.
Who the hell said JF wasn't a very technical player? That guy is an absolute genius. Just because he doesn't wank on 32nd notes doesn't mean he can't. |

IMO it's missing w/o it.
the song's gotta grow on me - I usually dont like things right away anyways . . . |

It sounds like a bunch of washed up, tired, and bored dudes trying to write hit songs. The guitar parts remind me of the noodling I do when I'm trying to come up with guitar parts for songs I write.
I love (ed?) the chili peppers. They're pretty much the ones that got me REALLY into playing bass. I'm going to hold onto my hope that there will be some redeeming material on this album. I liked the last album more than the 2 before it. My fingers are crossed. And I also think Navarro at least retained some of the energy and rock vibe in the band. I was hoping this guy was going to bring that back in an even cooler way.... ahhh..... |

both flea and john are big inspirations to me. to say JF isn't very technical is very wrong. look up his articles/lessons from guitar magazines (post-heroin hears). he may have been quite the minimalist in the Californication era. he would play verrrry simple solos and rarely add overly flashy fills. he reallly began to let it all out around the By The Way/ Stadium Arcadium days. and gooood for him. he's goood at it. the only bad thing i think...is that it took away a bit of their funk groove sometimes.
