The basslines are like if Tony Levin decided to write garage rock. They're just so fitting...a cornerstone for each song. Supports and drives the song forward at the same time.

Hearing Watcher Of The Skies (and seeing Peter's silhouetted bat-winged and caped figure bathed in black light) for the first time was a religious experience! Mike Rutherford's RM1999 and playing was a turning point in my musical life.

Sometimes even after hearing a great bass line, just watching somebody do it gives you even more respect for it |

It's one of those "perfect" bass albums for me. "Here's to Life" (the eighth track) was probably the most influential track for me on the album. It's involved, fun, active, but yet finds a way not to be super distracting (though definitely stands out and has some serious melodic parts). It kinda showed me that bass can really drive a song that's kinda good into a great, danceable song. It can take a song with ok energy into a song with tons of energy (even if the listener doesn't notice it's the bassist that's doing it). It also showed me that you can do "crazy" stuff like chords on bass and have it fit in without seeming forced. It pretty much makes the song even if most non-bassists don't realize it. Here's a YouTube link for those of you who haven't heard it yet (Ska-Punk warning!) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bNq_SpKih2I (Here's to Life is at 34:56) | Oh my Lord, I love Streetlight. Everything Goes Numb is great, Here's to Life is glorious, the bands is just awesome.
More on topic- Aram Bedrosian's solo record. That made me rethink what was possible with bass. Not necessarily to do a solo bass record, but to make something so structured and so well written with just one instrument. A lot of solo guys play great, but when they release an album of just them and their bass, it comes off as show-offy and not very musical. This album doesn't suffer that at all. It's amazing. |

It's solo bass but the songs actually have more complicated structure than many full band songs do. He really nails the harmony + melody on one instrument thing. You're a Streetlight fan too, nice!
hachi kid mentioned The Strokes. My band covers Reptilia and even though it's super simple I have a ton of fun playing it. The bass really adds a lot to their music and surprisingly for their genre grooves like crazy sometimes. |
