Albums That Should Be Considered for the Album Hall of Fame But Probably Would Not Be

Sign in to disble this ad
The best albums in history. Feel free to suggest albums to add to the list.

Lateralus - Tool - Amazing lyrics, great bass licks and godly drumming make this one a Magnus Opus

10,000 Days - Tool - I never thought a band could have two Magnus Opuses. This album just rocks.

Sailing the Seas of Cheese - Primus - Primus's best album IMO, perfect bass tracks, all together perfect songs, such as: Tommy the Cat, Those Damned Blue Collared Tweakers, and Jerry Was A Racecar Driver

Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust - Sigur Rós - Simply beautiful

Rage Against the Machine - Rage Against the Machine - The perfect combination of rap, funk, and metal

De-Loused in the Comatorium - The Mars Volta - One of the strangest concept albums out there, filled with abstract lyrics, odd time signatures, and crazy guitar riffs. Not to mention Flea on bass

Ghost Reveries - Opeth - The perfect mix between brutality and beauty.

Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots - The Flaming Lips - The most beautiful, emotional space rock album ever.

OK Computer - Radiohead - One of the most inventive albums to date.

Jaco Pastorius - Jaco Pastorius - One of the best jazz albums ever, personally my favorite. Portrait of Tracy is so beautiful

The Best Band You Never Heard in Your Life - Frank Zappa - Zappa at his best, includes covers of Purple Haze, and Stairway to Heaven

This is a repost of a reposted repost that was a reposted repost of a reposted repost that's been reposted, but just cuz I'm bored:

I would say The Soft Bulletin is generally considered the Flaming Lips crowning achievement, not Yoshimi. I'd add:

Black Sabbath - Masters of Reality

Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Lift your skinny fists like antenaes to heavens

Melvins - Stoner Witch

Aphex Twin - Drugks

Ben Folds Five - Whatever and Ever Amen

This could go on and on...

I'd rather see a "albums that SHOULD be considered for the Album Hall of Fame (if there were such a thing), but probably never would be" thread.

That's a good idea, I'll change the title of this thread. Can you give reasons for your albums?

Iron Maiden- Iron Maiden
This album has a great raw sound and Steve Harris' bass playing is top notch. Every song on here is excellent. The guitar tones are absolutely godly, especially on the slower songs like "Strange World" they are hauntingly atmospheric. Not to mention Paul Di'Anno on vocals, I still feel he was Maidens best singer.

Jethro Tull- Heavy Horses
This one came out during Tulls Folk stage. It features their best bassist hands down, the late John Glascock. The lyrics and vocals are amazing, as well as Ian Andersons acoustic guitar and flute. Having two keyboard players really works well for Tull on this album too, since David Palmer took over the second keyboard spot for a couple years. This is easily one of Jethro Tulls greatest albums, dare I say better than Aqualung and Thick as a Brick?

Thin Lizzy - Bad Reputation
Phil Lynott has an amazing mix of jazz and rock all throughout this album, not to mention their amazing drummer poundin' away.

Phantom Planet - Raise the Dead
All time favorite album, and a great concept one at that. Many branches of the alternative rock genre are covered, and all sound perfect. All that's lacking is the position of Sam farrar's volume knob.

sure...

Black Sabbath - Masters of Reality

Come on, every great riff ever written is on this album.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Lift your skinny fists like antenaes to heaven

The post-rock album of post-rock albums. Neo-classical minimalism with an 8 piece rock band.

Melvins - Stoner Witch

This is the perfect "stoner rock" album, every other stoner rock album is just trying to be this album without sounding too obvious.

Aphex Twin - Drugks

Richard D. James is a genius. This album is sort of the apex of his works, the perfect melding of everything that came before it. The ambient soundscapes, the IDM, the freakout glitchy noise, baroque, classical, 1000 mph breakbeats, etc. It's all there and perfectly melded together.

Ben Folds Five - Whatever and Ever Amen

I feel like Ben Folds is still gonna be doing amazing things when he's 70. He's like the Tom Waits or Elvis Costello of his generation. This album goes from rock to punk to polka to big band to honky tonk to classical to a myriad of other styes, often in the same song, and it all sounds natural and effortless.

You're a Woman, I'm a Machine - Death From Above 1979
It's just freaking good. Catchy beats, heavy sound.

Traveling Without Moving - Jamiroquai
Amazing musicianship. Can't find any faults.

Rated R - Queens of the Stone Age
I don't know, I just think it's awesome. Has a good vibe to it.

I'm sure there are others, these are just some that spring to mind.

Master of Reality was one of the first albums I ever bought (when I was 15, the same age as my daughter is now). I have never gotten tired of hearing it and I never will. The closing song, Into the Void is the "heaviest" doom metal sound ever. This album is overshadowed by Paranoid which always seems to rate higher on the "all time favorites" lists but Master of Reality is by far their best.

10,000 days is an absolute masterpiece. I think it is not only their best album but I will go so far as to say it is a pioneering work of music in its technical, musical and even philosophical excellence. It also will likely never be a contender for the top spots on "the all time favorites" lists because it requires too much active attention from the listener to really get the full effect. Casual listeners will get very little out of it, even if they are already Tool fans. A freaking masterpiece.

One last favorite:

The Vindictives - Hypno Punko

The album is pure genius. Twisted, but genius. A punk rock opera that flows (I wouldn't have thought that was possible) and it actually is hypnotic. Seriously, it is. This album is too weird to be considered for anyone's "great albums" list, but it's one of my all time favorites and in a world with more justice, it would be famous and would have sold millions of copies.

This is most likely going to be a great albums by favourite artists, but I can be self indulgent too

Tool - Aenima

An album that stretched the boundaries of one of the most brilliant bands ever. Without this album the following two could simply have never been made, and both of those are creations of pure art in their own right. First time I heard Third Eye I nearly went into another plane of existence.

Radiohead - The Bends

For similar reasons above, and because it has Street Spirit on it. One of the most underrated albums of the 90's.

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Blood Sugar Sex Majick

One of my very first cassette tapes when I was 12, recorded for me over something else by my uncle. The way it segues from track to track is mastery, it couldn't have been listed any better and there are some truly classic songs on there, like Suck My Kiss, Give It Away, and of course Under the Bridge.

Iron Maiden - Number of the Beast

There's nothing I can say about Iron Maiden that hasn't been said a thousand times before. I saw them in February this year and they finished with Hallowed Be Thy Name. Man, that was so incredible I can't begin to describe it.

Mr Bungle - Mr Bungle

Man, Mr Bungle would have to be one of the most underrated bands in history. Musical geniuses that crossed that line into insanity and back so often you were sometimes left guessing which side you were on. Incubus probably wouldn't exist if it wasn't for this album.

Midnight Oil - Diesel and Dust

A fantastic Australian band and arguably their best work. Great songs and some fantastic production with tastefully understated basslines. Great for driving through the bush!

I could go on, but that's enough for now...

"From the Inside" Alice Cooper;
This album has a great theme throughout the entire album. The writing is great because of that and the musicians on the album were top of the line studio players at the time. (Mostly from "Toto", who were awesome players in that day!) One of the all-time best "Cooper" albums, IMHO.

Ænima and Lateralus are both 10,000 times better than 10,000 Days. If I had to choose one Tool album it would be Ænima, no doubt about it.

Add to the list Master of Puppets and Appetite for Destruction.

I'd say In A priest Driven Ambulance. Soft Bulletin is a nice record too, I suppose.

Oooooh, good one.

10k Days is probably my favourite but in relevance to the thread I think Ænima should be the one that should be in the hall of fame but probably won't be.

I'd also like to nominate:

Soundgarden - Superunknown

If you've heard the album it doesn't require explanation. Simply awesome.

Primus - Suck on This

The album that got me into bass, magnificent from start to finish. Deserves far more praise than it ever receives.

First in with:

Rush, Moving Pictures. The pinnacle of their catalog, and a spectacular album.

Smashing Pumpkins, Siamese Dream. How good was this record? I liked it better before I heard Corgan speak, though.

Level 42, A Physical Presence. This 1984 live recording will let you know what Level 42 was really about.

Sting, Nothing Like The Sun. His first solo record was good, but this one showed us he was here to stay.

John Coltrane, A Love Supreme. A masterpiece among masterpieces.

Counting Crows, August and Everything After.

Lyle Lovett, Joshua Judges Ruth.

Steely Dan, Aja.

Living Colour, Time's Up.

Paul Simon - Gracelend (Ultra cool African blend of singing and rythym)
The Strokes - Is this it? (Simple yet hard driving songs with very nice R nR hooks)
Spyro Gyra - 20/20 (phenominal jazz album with the sound mix)
Billy Idol - Rebel Yell (ultra cool basslines and ubber guitars highlight a very groovable moving rock album)
Nick Mason + Rick Fenn - Profiles (a quirky and sonically diverse recording with excelent jazz undertones)

I'd like to nominate...

Alice in Chains-Dirt

Definitely one of the most underrated albums, with such songs as Angry Chair and Would?, and although remaining quite good (with such songs as No Excuses and Heaven Beside You), they never reached, and never will reach that level of greatness again.

Metallica-The Black Album

I like a few songs by these guys that were around before (Fade to Black, Master of Puppets, Welcome Home (Sanitarium), One) and after (Until It Sleeps, The Memory Remains, The Unforgiven II, Turn the Page) this album, but I think this was the one album they did that was truly great. My favourite songs include Sad But True, Don't Tread on Me, and The God that Failed, but I think this will be forever remembered for Enter Sandman.

Oasis-(What's the Story?) Morning Glory

Great indie album, and the home of perhaps my favourite song of all time, Wonderwall.

Queens of the Stone Age-Songs for the Deaf

Kind of hypnotic album, which everybody gushes about, and I think No One Knows and Go With the Flow are perhaps their best videos.

Radiohead-The Bends & OK Computer

Although Radiohead has been consistently good since these two albums, these are still better than anything else they've done.

Paul Simon-Graceland

I kind of like the African rhythms and the fretless bass.

Silverchair-Frogstomp

Forget Young Modern and Straight Lines. Forget Diorama. This is Silverchair at their greatest. And yet, Israel's Son is the only song from this album that they play live anymore.

Soundgarden-Badmotorfinger & Superunknown

I haven't quite heard the whole albums, but to my ears, Soundgarden exhibits little to no flaws. Badmotorfinger had Jesus Christ Pose, Outshined and Rusty Cage, whilst Superunknown exhibited Spoonman, Black Hole Sun and Fell On Black Days.

The White Stripes-Elephant

It features so much more than Seven Nation Army, and it has a heavy rock feel, which I like. Their follow up had only one good song that was like this.
