To me, what makes a good bass line is it's interaction with other instruments. (Mostly drums).

Oh...wrong forum.

Some of the Stones songs have great basslines that I would enjoy listening to with only the bass playing. There are others, but I don't recall off hand what they are.
The bass is a musical instrument and is quite capable of producing beautiful music on its own. IMHO

learned how to play this album start to finish when i was in 8th grade. got everything from fast, driven punk solos to jazzy walking lines, and some ska/reggae. a must have if you're a bass player. |

Maybe some cd's with Jamerson would be nice too. Stevie Wonders For Once In My Life maybe. Oh and 'Live', by Donny Hathaway.

Many of those songs exist in bass-only form on the Dos albums, which were bass duets between Mike Watt and his ex-wife, Kira Roessler, who played bass for Black Flag. It's fascinating to listen to the bass-only versions and realize just how essential Watt's playing is to every album he's been on.
