Albums By Your Musical Heroes That Are Underrated/Known

Relayer by Yes. Fantastic. The Gates of Delirium is genius. Sound Chaser is sick.

Signals by Rush. Great tone, even though I hate Steinbergers. Great songs. Seems to be that perfect balance between their older, harder rocking prog stuff and their 80's synth stuff.

Ghost in the Machine by the Police. I can't stand the repetitiveness of "One World", but Invisible Sun, Spirits In the Material World, Demolition Man, Secret Journey, and Every Little Thing She Does is Magic more than make up for it.

All of Signals is the Ric or the Jazz bass

Geneva - Russian Circles

Oxeneers or The Lion Sleeps When its Antelopes Go Home - These Arms Are Snakes

Both feature absolutely phenomenal bass playing and synthwork from Brian Cook.

Quicksand... Slip & Manic Compression.

These guys were "it" for me for a couple years & Sergio Vega's generally pretty simple lines really drive the songs.

AC/DC's Powerage. Seems like no one knows about it, and I think its their most solid whole album they've ever done.

Drama by Yes. Machine Messiah and Tempus Fugit are sick!
Signals and GUP by Rush (Ged started to use a Steinberger on GUP)

Ride - "Nowhere". I'm a sucker for 80's/90's Brit rock and shoegaze. The bass tone on "Nowhere" sounds crunchy despite the clean/reverb-like guitar tones. Love it. Check out the songs "Taste" and "Dreams Don't Burn".

Pantera - "Reinventing The Steel". I find that this is Pantera's lease talked about record. Rex Brown is the man. I absolutely LOVE the bass tone on this record. Check out the songs "I'll Cast A Shadow" and "Revolution Is My Name".

Zenyatta Mondatta by The Police and In The Absence Of Truth by Isis.

I have a history of liking albums that the creators of the albums themselves dislike, the above being cases in point.

Actually, it's the only Rush album recorded with the Steinberger. And while I'm an absolute L2/XL2 fan, I must say that it's my least favorite Geddy tone.

Wait...

You guys consider Relayer, Drama, Zenyatta Mondatta, Ghost In The Machine, Signals, and Grace Under Pressure to be under-rated / unknown albums?

Wow - I hope I can someday reach such levels of unpopular obscurity!

Prime example: Allan Holdsworth's Velvet Darkness
While I can understand why Allan detests that record, the performances on it are all the more striking because they were rehearsals. Alphonso Johnson on bass & (especially) Narada Michael Walden on drums just tear it up!

Heroes??? I don't think these would qualify as my heroes, but I do like these albums for what they are, and usually anybody I mention them to has never heard of them.

Sneaker Pimps - Bloodsport
Helio Sequence - Love and Distance

My ears say

Ric
Subdivisions
The Analog Kid
Losing It (Could go either way)
Countdown

Jazz
Chemistry
Digital Man
New World Man
The Weapon

Also, I'd say don't bash a Stein just for it's looks if you haven't played one. Also you don't have to like things just because Geddy Lee used them, or dislike them because he stopped using them.

It is neither underrated nor unknown, but how about undersold? Kind of Blue is one of the most acclaimed and popular jazz albums ever made, and in the 51 years since its release, it has sold about 4 million copies. I think the Jonas Brothers have sold over 8 million.

Guy Pratt on Toy Matinee and Tears For Fears' Elemental albums. Love his tone and phrasing on both!

The Police themselves consider it their weakest effort, as do most critics. I'd definitely consider it to be underrated in that respect.

A big +1 to Powerage, fine album.

Jack Bruce - Monkjack. He plays bass on one track, the rest is largely him playing piano & singing.

The first three Blue Öyster Cult albums...

Blue Öyster Cult (sometimes called 'Windows'), Tyranny & Mutation, and Secret Treaties - strong Sandy Perlman influence throughout all of them. The first album is a real gem, very varied - a bit like Sabbath's 'Vol. 4', but they tend to get swamped out by the AOR-fest of 'Some Enchanted Evening'.

Last Days of May & I'm On The Lamb But I Ain't No Sheep & Before The Kiss, A Redcap

I thought David Bowie's double live album 'Stage' had a pretty raw deal when released, Adrian Belew on guitar and George Murray on bass, it's well played, the critics considered it a little bit clinical/tight?, George Murray is right on the ball, a great performance by the band imo.
