Here's a collection of classic Allman Brother songs that I recorded at home using a Roland BR600 recorder, several basses (multiple tracks) and a drum machine (all instrumentals).
It was challenging trying to keep them interesting (although the "interesting" part is debatable! ).
I had fun though.
Enjoy! Statesboro Blues Don't Want You No More One Way Out Elizabeth Reed Whipping Post Stand Back You Don't Love Me
Basses used were Roscoe 5 (fretted & fretless) & Roscoe 6 fretted

What are the wood combos & electronic of the basses used in "you don't love me"? Just curious. |

That bass has a Spanish cedar body, Ziracote top, maple finger board, Roscoe Bart P/U's and Bart 3-band preamp. |

Very nice recordings indeed ... I'd like to ask a little about your recording setup.
Did you go directly into the BR600 with your bass and use some of the presets, or did you use a DI?
Also, what drum machine are you using? |

Most of the time I went directly into the BR600. On several of the recordings I did use an Alembic F1-X on the front end though. It warmed it up a bit. Other than that I used a small amount of reverb on the fretless parts (BR600 reverb) and distortion (BR600) on a couple of the tunes.
The BR600 has some nice Mastering toolkits built in so it added a bit of compression and other effects during the mastering phase.
I used the Dr. Rhythm built into the BR600 for all of the drums. The BR600 is tough to beat if you're on a budget. Everything that you need to record for less than $300. |

R/R offers a great bang for the buck. It's only $400-500 for the entire package and has everything that you need to record (PC & Mac based software).
I used my Roscoe mahogany body/walnut top 3006, a Squire Strat (alder body) & the Reason keyboard, effects and drums sounds.
I'm still working on the vocals. VPs Galore

Kinda surprised you went with such a mellow lead sound for the high parts, makes it feel much more ambient that I'd have expected (listening to Whipping Post now) and gives it your own style for sure!

I really intended for Whipping Post to be much more laid back than the original. That's was the main drive behind the slower tempo.
Thanks for listen to the tunes and for your feedback! |

I've started getting away form the "All Bass" recordings and started writing more from the guitar. They both still need vocals. Falling Down Drought Days

couple questions..
you said you can get recording for under $300.00 (or around) I am creeping up on that market..
can you PM me your set up? (or post it here w/e) I want to start recording some of my ideas. but I dont have any know how, or equipment.
about how long does it take to create a track?
how long you been recording music?
Do you need specific software to record and put to media player?
again I am pretty much at ground zero here..but would appreciate some ideas. I will do a search on the BR600.
Current wishilist is:
- a drum machine
- Recorder (if I can land an all in one combo, that would all the better!)
- Looper and a couple pedals
Thanks if you can help out with some suggestions. |

I'm hoping to gain some quality input and hopefully meet some more TB'ers interested in home recording on this forum. Quote: |

I've been messing around with home recording for 2 years (this August). I didn't even know how to record and share a basic sound clip.
VroomVroom (Jerry) actually got me interested in when he and Rocketmusic (Greg) started posting all of their awesome sound clips.
I started out using a Roland (BOSS) BR600 unit. It has 4 individual tracks, 2 stereo tracks (Total of 8), built in BOSS effects AND a built Roland (BOSS) Dr. Rhythm (drum machine). Basically everything that you need to start home recording. It can be purchased for $285 -$350 on line.
I used that for a little over a year and recently moved up to a PC/Mac based software called Reason/Record. The software cost approx. $300-$500 on line. I've found that it's much easier to use compared to the Roland BR600 (once get familiar with it). After hearing and seeing some screen clips of what Greg (Rocketmusic) was doing in Sonar 8, I figured I just had to make the jump! I'm very glad that I did.
Reason/Record has everything built in that you need plus you can cut & paste so much easier than with a machine similar to the BR600. It has 1,000's of drum kits & professional effects built in plus you can download refills (add ones) and/or purchase other 3rd party software that works within R/R too. I'm not sure what the maximum number of tracks you can create but I've done some tunes with 16-20 with no issues. I believe that it may be limited to 32 tracks.
You do need a fairly high powered PC or Mac to run the software but I already needed a new PC and purchased that for $1000. Go to the Propellerheads.com web site for more info on minimum requirements and features.
If you've got any specific questions let me know. It's definitely a lot of fun. Even though I rarely completely finish a song, I've been able to archive dozens of good ideas for original songs for future use with a group. |

| | Cogito Ergo Idiot | | Join Date: Jan 2007 Location: SF Bay Area, CA | | FWIW, after a couple of mulligans (including the BR600), I picked up a Presonus all-in-one kit, with a 24-bit USB interface, mic, headphones, and their Studio One software....including some great drum loops, and lots of MIDI instrument samples. I've been really impressed with everything - including the quality of the mic and headphones, not something I at all expected. Total investment was $200, although I've since added a set of M-Audio monitors and MIDI controller....at that I'm still in under $500.
Honestly, installing the software was less intuitive than actually using it. The manual is good, there are a number of youtube vid tutorials, and a company called Groove3 offers a $30 package that is very inclusive. All good stuff. Here are a couple of samples...drum loops and a few bass tracks. Don't Get Around Much See Flat Blues |

I didn't realize that package was that affordable. Definitely a great deal!
And your recordings have something going on that mine don't ... Incredible bass chops!
I love both tunes but that 2nd one is really nice sounding! |

This one is an unplugged version of the Alllman Brothers song "Midnight Rider". All parts were recorded using my walnut/mahogany Roscoe 3006.
Happy 4th everyone! Midnight Rider

I recorded the main bass part with my new G&L L2500 and used my Roscoe 3006 for all other bass parts to the song.
I recorded this tune using the Roland BR600. Whipping Post | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
