In my opinion, all this new music that's coming out these days seems to be exactly the same.
Now i know there are some songs and bands that really are new and 'fresh' and original.
For the most part everything is the same. Especially mainstream stuff like pop and hip hop and rap.
Its awfully annoying, sometimes i cannot stand to listen to the radio.
IE- jonas brothers, miley cyrus (Hannah montana), just about any hip hop or rap group. can you even consider these people musicians? because i sure don't
questions? comments? concerns?

Walah. Crappy music = easy money (as long as you are "hot")

I can't stress enough how amazing local shows can be. There are certain venues up here in Buffalo that never cease to blow my mind with the acts they find. Very interesting stuff. |

I even hear a lot of girls/women singing with that grunting sound starting every word they sing.
I think todays pop music offers NOTHING in terms of great musicianship like it used to in days long gone by.
Can anyone name for me one bassist in today's pop music that even comes close to Jamerson or Carol Kaye in terms of pure talent and memorable basslines?
I won't hold my breath for an answer.

If you listen to the lyrical content of country, pop, rock, and hip hop, it's all pretty much either teen-movie dilemma or flaunting the "good life". The record companies are genius: don't write a new song, just change out the banjo for a synth and you have turned a country song into an r&b jam. We all have to realize that the greatest common denominator doesn't care about artistic integrity, never has, never will.
I do however see bits and pieces of creativity in the scene. I think in order to notice these changes, you need to look at the innovator, not the follower. For instance, T-Pain, Lil Wayne, and Kanye West did change hip hop. The followers are garbage, but they started incorporating trance and techno into pop music. A few years ago Lil Jon made hip hop fun again, stuff like that.
As for rock, I think it's been stagnant for a few (2-3) years. I'm into punk/alternative stuff, but even the metal and hardrock is getting bland. I thought Avenged Sevenfold were going to pioneer "pop metal" but then their last album came out and was bland.
I'm looking forward to the musical response to today's music. I think the reaction will be very acoustic and anti-pop (kinda like 90s grunge stuff). Let's hope. |

Never buy MP3s online - download instead.
Always support your band by going to their shows and buy a t-shirt or something, the band has a far greater cut in the gig and t-shirt sales than the music they made since they have to pay a multitude of people to be able to record and produce it.
In addition, throw away your TV, don't pay attention to main stream media, watch and read blogs like The Needle Drop for excellent independent music, that isn't crassly produced.

| | | | I'll just say that this is nothing new. Listen to any Big Band, Doo Wop, Motown, 60's Folk, Disco or Gurnge. The battle between art and commerce is is as old as Mozart. Someone innovates, and everyone rushes in to capitalize.
At least it's a lot easier these days to find of all kinds of cool stuff beyond the top 40. Thank God for the internet. |
