I was using a 4001 but the EQing had a lot to do with it too. I boosted quite a bit in the 50 and 100 and the 3k ranges. The 3k is where you get the klackiness. And a 7.5 dB cut at around 400 and a slight cut a 7K. And some chorus.

Sounds pretty good. Find a good clean version of the isolated bass tracks from Moving Pictures and compare back and forth. You can also get a decent Geddy Wal tone with your L2K.
Well, Moving Pictures has a real compressed and dirty tone from both his Ric and Jazz basses and I dont know if I would call that his signature Ric tone as much as I would point to the A Farewell to Kings disc where the tone is more pure Rickenbacker tone. He does get a great tone on Moving Pictures but it is a bit more tweaked. Also, the Signals album has a great Ric tone, on the tracks with the Ric, especially Countdown but again, half of that album is with the Jazz Bass. His Ric and Jazz Bass tones are so close at times it's hard to tell which is which although, a few careful listens might help figure that out. Geddy himself isnt quite sure which tracks had what bass. I've read interviews where he has said one thing and then in others said another thing. Somewhere there must be an absolute record of exactly which bass was used on each track. You know what?.. I really like his tone on All The World's a Stage too. It's his old early 70's Ric through SVT's but it has this awesome tone that is also another great example of a great Ric tone. Alright, I'm going all over the place here with this now..
Wow, I did not know he used his jazz on the Signals album. I thought that was all Ric. And I might add, its my favorite ric tone of his too. Especiually on (funny you mentioned it as I thought I was the only one) Countdown.
I onetime had an old 4 channel Realistic(radio shack I think) P.A. head it was something like 80 watts. I ran my G&L into it, turned on channel up, the bass would easily distort it and switched to the neck position, and I swear it sounded like the Signals countdown sound. Chunk and cluck galour.
As far as Geddy not knowing what basses were played on what tracks, I can understand that. He probably tracked both basses on all tracks, then either he or Terry chose which one sat best in the mix.
Oh BTW Jgroh, yes the L2000 does a nice wal tone. I will try to record a Wal tone with it tomorrow. Clean an twangy.

LB, you mention a little chorus. You know some of his sounds, especially on signals, sounds like there is a slight , or tiny , almost transparent chorus going on. When I was recording the G&L, on the neck pickup, I turned the chorus switch on. HAd the rate on 0 and the depth on 10. exxxttrerra slow. It caught some of what I am hearing on Geddys tracking from those days.
I however do not think he was tracking with a chorus on. But rather (this is accomplished on tracking on two channels) one track in real time, and the other track moved, just a nano second ahead or behind. This will indeed create an "out of phase" or chorus like sound to the bass.
Example is on the song Chemistry, during the chorus at 1:30 - about 2:00 I swear I hear a slight our of phase or chorus like sound.
Check it out.

Yeah, he did. When he played the Ric, he used the Ric-o-sound option, hence the great tone...
Bridge pickup - dirty, neck pickup - clean. This way you can get that great twangy treble sound without losing the nice bottom end.

I use a similar technique sometimes but instead of two tracks I use three. Leave one panned center, pan the other two left and right delay them both, one slightly more than the other. I like the big (spatially speaking) stereo effect. Here's a sample. (by the way, how do you guys get soundcloud to include the player?)

Nice technique LB75. Sounded cool, I can hear it.
Time to go back to the labratory! That Signals sound is so upfront with that triple tracked or however many tracks terry ran for him . You can really hear that exaggerated "space" causing that sound (chorus like) to occur. oohhhh I want to break out the bass now..

Sidetrack...
i think there might be a recording i did with my l2k and acg preamp here on TB where i played Analog Man. I wasnt going 100% to nail the Wal tone, but it gets in the vicinity.
the player is an option you see when you use the regular reply option. I see mine right over there >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>/l
Got it! Thanks.

Yeah too much delay and it looses the sense of being just one bass. Your tone is sounding good though but it sounds a bit nasally, not sure how to get rid of that. I've never used a Tech 21 but maybe adjusting the Blend and/or Presence might dial it in.

As I said in post # 15, that tone was the best. Too much tinkering will be nothing but frustration. And, Geddy didn't really use effects. There is some flanging or something like that in Vital Signs but for the most part Geddy was effect free. Maybe some compression and a bit of dirty overdrive but chorus?? Nope.
The only real way to replicate Geddy's Rickenbacker tone is to use a Rickenbacker 4001 in stereo and then make sure you hit hard, run the bass full wide open and adjust your amp tone to suit. Oh, and use Rotosound RS66 rounds.
You can only get so close with a different type of bass.
Rupture, I am pretty sure he used two Ashly BP41 (40?) preamps. One for the bridge (dirty), and one for the neck.
Hey guys I know that nothing will quite sound like a ric, except a ric. I am just trying for fun to get as close as I can with the gear I have.
The sound or nasal sound is because I have the mids cranked and the character knob almost fully cranked on the VT pedal. I am running that into one channel of an amp, then the "clean" lows are coming from a tech21 bddi .
I've been busy werkin these last few days, but once some time opens up I will try and record some more.

This kind of stuff isn't frustrating at all to me it's fun to experiment.
