Am I the only person who hears the similarities?

Ok. Call out my manliness if you may, but my (now ex) girlfriend played this Taylor Swift song for me called "That's the Way I Loved You" and it sounded familiar to me.

I picked my brain for a few hours, then realized the main verse melody sounds quite similar to "Complicated" by Avril Lavigne. I told her, and she said she didn't hear it. It sounds the same to me, just the rhythm on the first two notes is different. Am I nuts and just hearing things????

here are youtube clips

For what it's worth: I know many songs have similar melodies, I just thought it was weird that my ex didn't hear that she was listening to regurgitated melodies. She's even a musical person! (sings and plays violin, but mostly does ballet) I am not trying to bash either artist, they're obviously doing better than I am!

thank god she is your ex. I had trouble deciding which pitch corrected "song" was better. The similarity is there. And they both were bad.

Haha. Her taste in music was far from one of her finer qualities.

Just one, or did those qualities come in a pair... and yes, I do find those two songs to be quite similar.

Haha. She was a dancer, so there were no pairs. So one quality. Well, if hips and backside count as two, then two.

Needless to say, I tolerated mindless pop music from her mp3 player for nearly two years. She ended our relationship the other day after the biggest gig in my life .

But then I fixed it by treating myself to a new chorus pedal.

Bass playing - 1, Relationships - 0

Bring on the groupies

You made me dig it up.

Edit: I play pop-punk, and I love the good ol' I V VI IV and all the variants. But with the same chord progression, there are infinite melodies. I just can't stand repeated melodies going unnoticed.

Here I was thinking "well Taylor Swift actually writes her own stuff AND she's popular AND she's a country artist?!" There goes that celebrity crush.

Similar, but not close enough to get anybody sued.
