Amazing 4-String Work: 21 Frets or Less

Sign in to disble this ad
I'd like to make a thread of the most amazing bass playing you've seen on a 4-string with 21 frets or less.

Also, we all know Jaco and Jamerson were incredible. I'd like to see some vids of other folks that are less than a house-hold name.

(This is NOT knock on multi-string basses or instruments with more frets - I love those too. I'd just like to see examples of bassists working creatively within more constraints. )

I'll kick this off with a couple of my favs:

YouTube - ‪Vulfpeck

YouTube - ‪thumpR - "Nail In The Coffin"‬‏

Can't wait to see more!

Great thread, great vidz!

Here's two of my favorite bass players who I shamelessly plug every chance I get...

Dario Deidda: Puttin on the Ritz

Dario Deidda again (rockin' a Squier)

Juraj Griglak jamming for a fan at a music shop

Juraj solo

Great groove, doesn't over play and carries rythm and melody nicely.

1st guy Not my cup of tea just ripping 16th notes constantly. Can tell he had mad chops but not rythmic or diverse just straight fling'n. Slapper pretty good and fast.

Yes, I know it's not for everybody, but nobody can deny his technical prowess.

Sheehan was my first bass hero.

Here's Juraj Griglak - a very awesome and tasteful player:

I dig all of those clips, surprisingly I had never seen that Dario Deidda clip before and I thought I saw every possible video of the man!

Jeff Berlin is such a smokin' player.

I picked up a Yiorgas Fanakas album off of iTunes recently, "Maestro". That guy is no joke. I relented from posting a youtube clip with him because the quality isn't that great, so check him out on iTunes if you haven't heard that album.

I played a few 5 strings this past weekend, I've never been anti-5 string but since I went back to playing 4 string almost exclusively in 2009, I've been less and less impressed with the B string on any 5 string. They just never seem to have the same attack and fundamental as the rest of the strings.

Well I got a youtube subscription update this morning, that plus a little downtime at work means I had some time to catch a few new vidz...

Dario Deidda on Fender Coronado bass and as usual, he's amazing. Marco Panascia mentioned a little over a year ago that this was Dario Deidda's new favorite bass but I'm just starting to see more videos with him playing it.

Johan Hansen Larson. JHL (who showed up here) is flat out killin' it on a new set that his band played recently. Here's one with a nice latin feel and a bass solo. Nice comping bringing the band back in, nice scat solo by the singer as well.

Richard Bona on fretless...an oldy but goody...I love this version of Bright Sized Life (Live)

All of John Enwtistle's recorded stuff up to and including Who's Next was done on a 21 fret Fender (or Rickenbacher for some of the Sings My Generation album). He's not underrated, but Won't Get Fooled Again and Live at Leeds being played on 21 frets is pretty awesome.
