Fellow Bassists
I came across this video of Jaco on Youtube. I'm fairly new to bass playing, of course I've heard Jaco's music but have never seen him play. I was just blown away. So I wanted to share this video with all of you and hope you enjoy it as much as I did, and still do. Cheers http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aRNsn_7XGrA |

i've never seen that video before and I was bored.
It's all the same stuff. Those 5-note groups, obscure chords, etc etc...
Here's my favourite solo Jaco's played. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C-gbGEprDoA |

ALL BASS PLAYERS!!!
imagine a beginner standing five feet in front of this dude while he playing a looped version of my favorite song, "PURPLE HAZE"!!!!
i ran home and practiced all night,... well thanks to him,... INSPIRED!!!! (sorry JimiLL)

I can still remember how great he sounded. The best part was his bass was LOUD and the tone was going the walls. Hearing him live is 1000% better than anything he ever did on records |

Jaco's fine, but I've never liked the drummer, Alphonse Mouzon's playing in any recording or group I've heard him in, and the clip you provided is no exception to my findings. Well anyways, thanks for taking the initiative to hip us to something new or whatever you like.

I think given the time is was recorded, aka, 1976, should temper negative or less-than-glowing opinions a bit.
I'm no Jaco-sycophant, but I can recognize that Jaco, circa-1976 was a watershed period for defining and redefining the role of electric bass in jazz and by extension, to a degree, in popular music.

His real prowess was in his compositional soloing/melodic concept(he pretty much wrote all of his studio solos before playing them), his unbelievable touch, and his unshakable groove. Jaco jamming is often utterly uninspiring to, but man, if he has it worked out beforehand does it SING.

Out of everything ive heard from him, the "unshakeable groove" is not something id really use to try and describe his playing.
He seems a little caught up in "how great he is" to let things breathe, step back, and be a real "bass player".
Let the flames begin! But its ok, I enjoy thinking for myself.

I know he was great and all, but that example just sounds like random blips and bleeps. Not even real clean as best I could tell.
He was still great, but I would have walked out on such a performance to find something more "musical" sounding.
YMMV. we all have different tastes afterall. |

Let the flames begin! But its ok, I enjoy thinking for myself. | I sure hope you'll invest in some studio stuff. You'll find out.
And also in the future, I hope you think about context and history when judging the merits of players/musicians, and that one youtube video moment does not define ability, or a career (in general) or place in music and in bass history.
I would like to think that we all think for ourselves and that I happen to enjoy some (not all) of Jaco's work does not negate that. One of the differences between you and I, is that I do have about 90% of the available recordings (live and in studio) he's done. I like Jaco, based on those recordings, which long-predated any involvement with internet, or any bass-playing community, period, including Talk Bass. So at least on my part, interest in Jaco was certainly due to "thinking for myself".
You have Jaco to thank, in large part, for the continued existence, distribution and maturity of the Hartke Company and their products. Which, as I understand it, you are a fan of.
