At first I didn't really was "into" Wooten, but after seeing some video's (including this one) I'm starting to like his style more and more

The percussive slide this he does at 2.15 is amazing!

Slap and awe

While I think what they did in that clip could hardly be called "musical", I must say that I really liked the sound Victor had going on, really fat and full-sounding, not at all brittle.

Vic actually credits Regi for teaching him most of what he Knows.

Okay - I trust you.But I would like to see or hear it before I believe it.I was referring to his playing in the clip and the whole Bassday performance - that's some sorry stuff...
What's he done that's worth listening to?

i think the vid is pretty cool, i think that playing that fast isn't musical, but in all fairness they were really just having a competition for speed...its like a nascar, sure in the real world you don't need to go that fast, but the competition is just to see who can go the fastest!

from a traditional white european "melody centric" interpretation of the term "musical"

why can't we be friends?

it's a subject of debate, but Vic is regarded by a lot of people as the most technically proficient bassist on the planet right now.

I almost said 'best', but that's subjective. Technically proficient is easier to measure.

It's not fair to judge Vic by looking at a 2 minute clip that was obviously a 'wankfest' with his brother Regi. They are both great musicians, make no mistake. I saw Vic with Mike Stern, Dennis Chambers, and Bob Francescini (sp?) and it was so good I had to go back the next night. The man can groove...I think each bassist has a slightly different concept of 'groove'. I like a thicker tone with less notes, played a fraction of a fraction behind the beat. I think Vic is closer to the beat and his tone is way more 'hi-fi'...

but you gotta hear his stuff with the Flecktones, all of it. I haven't heard it all but am ready to dive into the new stuff.

Looks to me like they were just having a bit of fun. It sounded ok to me even though I'm not big on that kind of stuff. Also, I don't think making racial comments is necessary or appropriate.

Perhaps not.
But singling out any ethnic group, no matter what the circumstances, can be taken that way. I wasn't offended, but I've seen posts get moderated for less. Sorry, I didn't mean to start anything.

My only intention was to point out that a comment calling the Wooten's obviously rhythmic musical improvisation not "musical" could only be made from euro-centric vantage point that holds melody as the primary form of music.

Shift your cultural vantage point and the standard for what is and isn't "musical" will change.

I'm a black American, and I "don't" see anything racist about what Jeff said. I find it refreshingly mature and insightful. Stop leaning towards stupidity. Jesus, is it possible for me to read a post without somebody ready to take offense or "hear" something that's not there? Let's have some more maturity, we're supposed to be "brothers of bass."

As far as criticizing the performance, don't miss the point.... It was entertainment....period. Stop looking for meaning in something that isn't supposed to have any. "I" couldn't do it, and I'm sure 99% of "you" couldn't do it.

It made me laugh when he qouted Stanley and a few other things.

C'mon youngsters, lighten up!

Ugh, guys. come on, haven't we been through this.

Music is only musical when it's slow. Victor wooten has ugly teeth. The pope is a woman, and peanut butter is a racial slur. There. Everyone happy now? goodnight.

Yeah I agree that part was 100% for entertainment purposes. And they were successful. Victor is known for breaking traditions. And he isnt the only one. It was just him and his brother goofing around. If we circled our playing around traditon we would be the most boring musicians ever. And would keep the thought of the bass being an "easy" instrument.

I used to be really into him, I had major chops at the time, jsut from trying to do what he was doing. I kinda drifted away from that, and now I can't do half the stuff I could do before. It's depressing.
