How about that Cornelius Bumphus on sax! |

What's amazing about the bassist is that he sang very well AND played well - - Check out their first album (title "Ambrosia") for some real cool tunes you've never heard on the air.
As for the bass - I believe that's a J body / P-neck... I recall reading that's what he favored, and that's what it look like on that video - at least to me. Can't tell you about the amp, but the big amps back then were Sunn, Ampeg and Acoustic.

Very active in the biz still, produces a lot of up-and-comers. I think his tone is the result of being shorter than his bass myself. Like Kenny Passarelli, another J Bass player.

How about that Cornelius Bumphus on sax! | +1 Great band. Yes, that sounds like a J Bass favoring the bridge pickup and digging in a bit close to the bridge. It also has that 'Hi A' replacement pickup tone (that eventually became the Bartolini company). A lot of guys put those original Hi A's into their J bass, resulting in that smooth, mid oriented burpy tone with very little of the classic 'J grind or brightness'. Nice tone! |

Seriously, though, thanks so much for posting that link. What a great band and a great performance. "Midnight Special" was such a cool show back in the day. Loads of great bands who could really play. They were the real deal.
Bands like Ambrosia and Player were cool because not only were the instrumental arrangements to their songs nice, but the vocals (usually provided by several band members) were fantastic. Must have had something to do with all the beards back then.
The bass playing and bass tone in that clip were second to none. I've always LOVED that tone. |

in comparison, modern music is a complete disappointment. Damn, I sound like an old grump .
